Basketball | Marcus Latham
Latham, a 6-foot-1 senior for the Alton Redbirds, had a heck of a week the week of Dec. 7.
Latham led the Birds in scoring in two Southwestern Conference wins, a 73-58 rout of O’Fallon on Dec. 8 and a tough 65-59 win over Granite City on Dec. 11.
Against the Panthers, Latham poured in a game-high 22 points. Alton blasted O’Fallon, racing out to a 22-5 lead after one quarter, and led 50-25 at the break.
The Warriors proved a little more challenging, but it was Latham with a team-high 22 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter when it counted the most. He buried three treys in the final quarter at GCHS.
“Me scoring a lot of points is a plus, but getting the win is a whole lot better,” Latham said after the win over the Warriors, moving Alton to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the SWC.
Wrestling | Connor Broyles
Broyles, an Alton High senior, was key in Redbird wrestling toppling the Granite City Warriors in wrestling for the first time since 1938 on Dec. 10.
Broyles, ranked No. 11 at 138 pounds in the state on www.illinoismatmen.com, dropped down to 132 pounds to face Granite City’s Jared Skaggs in the 33-23 dual victory. Broyles picked up a big 17-2 tech fall victory to push Alton ahead by 10 points with two bouts remaining.
“Me going down to 132, (Jaelyn Watkins) filling in at 138, what’s going through my mind is I’m here to play a role,” Broyles said after the win over GCHS.
At press time Wednesday, the Redbirds were perched at 7-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Southwestern Conference. They had a dual at Collinsville on Thursday and enter the Mascoutah Invite on Friday and Saturday.
