Basketball | Blake Marks
Marks, a senior for the East Alton-Wood River Oilers’ boys’ basketball team, cemented himself in the program’s history on Dec. 16 at Memorial Gymnasium in Wood River.
Marks became the 14th member of the elite 1,000-point club at EA-WR in a 54-35 win over the Brussels Raiders. Marks poured in 23 points in the victory to lead the Oilers.
His historic points came on a traditional 3-point play with 5:59 to play in the second quarter. The 1,000th point came on the free throw.
Play was stopped so EA-WR head coach Kyle Duncan could supply Marks with a photo to commemorate his accomplishment. He now has 1,010 points in his career. He’s averaging a team-best 23 points per game on the season.
Basketball | Caitlyn Hanlon
A senior guard for the Marquette Catholic Explorers, Hanlon was a huge contributor in getting the Explorers to the championship game of the Candy Cane Classic at Gibault High School in Waterloo on Dec. 19.
Hanlon netted a team-high 11 points in the title tilt with Waterloo, but unfortunately the Explorers fell 44-42 in the tight contest.
Hanlon scored a Marquette-best 34 points in the three games at Gibault in the tournament, earning her a spot on the All-Tournament squad.
She was the catalyst for the surprise run, after the Explorers limped into the tournament on a seven-game losing skid.
Hanlon is averaging nearly 10 points per game for 4-10 Marquette. She also leads the team in assists.
