Broyles, a senior for the Alton Redbird wrestling squad, turned in a great performance on the mat Feb. 11-12 at the Class 3A Bolingbrook Sectional.
Broyles secured the sectional championship at 132 pounds, qualifying for the individual state tournament for the second straight season.
He earned an opening-round bye before eking out a 3-2 decision over Lincoln-Way East’s Jake DiBenedetto, winning 9-3 over Marc Fleenor of Plainfield South and earning a 3-2 decision against Providence Catholic’s Juan Bazaldua in the finals.
Broyles entered state with a 41-3 overall record and was ranked seventh at 132 pounds, according to www.illinoismatmen.com at press time.
Broyles opened the state tournament Thursday against Niko Derain (32-12) of St. Charles East. Derain is an honorable mention wrestler at 132 in the state rankings.
Wrestling | Drew Sobol
Sobol, a junior for the East Alton-Wood River Oilers, garnered the championship at 106 pounds Feb. 12 at the Class 1A Carterville Sectional.
Sobol grabbed the sectional title after earlier earning the Althoff Regional crown. It’s the third time in three years Sobol has qualified for the individual state tournament.
He improved to 36-3 on the season, going undefeated in Carterville. After a first-round bye, he pinned Zeth Stallings of Lawrenceville in 50 seconds, then bested Cole Maxedon of Auburn 10-2 and pinned Bailey Powell of Litchfield in 1:58 in the title bout.
At press time, Sobol was ranked No. 2 at 106 pounds, according to www.illinoismatmen.com.
He drew Kelly Griffin (19-9) of Chicago Bowen to open the state tournament on Thursday.
