Wrestling | Zac Blasioli
A junior for the East Alton-Wood River Oilers, Blasioli enjoyed a fantastic run at the Class 1A individual state tournament at U of I’s State Farm Center Feb. 18-20.
Blasioli finished second in the state at 152 pounds, going down to the wire with Shelbyville’s Garrett Brachbill in a 4-3 loss in the title bout.
Blasioli became only the third Oiler in school history to wrestle for a state title. Josh Bennett won the lone state crown for EA-WR at 103 pounds in 2009. Tony Kusmanoff finished second at 133 pounds in 1961.
Blasioli is also the first Oiler grappler to own two state medals. He also garnered a sixth-place medal at 160 pounds as a freshman in 2014.
Blasioli won three matches at state to advance to the state finals, prevailing 1-0, 9-5 and 4-2 in overtime vs. Dakota’s Jared Packer in the semifinals.
