Anna Moehn | Swimming
Summers-Port’s Moehn ended her last season in the 11-12 girls’ division in style on July 17 at the Southwestern Illinois Swim Association Championships at Summers-Port Pool.
Moehn finished first in five events and earned a first-place High Point award at the SWISAs. The 11-year-old won the 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard intermediate medley and the 50-yard backstroke and helped the freestyle and medley relay teams pick up victories.
“She’s one of those athletes who understands what needs to be done,” Summers-Port coach Nancy Miller said. “She has the intellect. She has the desire to improve herself on a daily basis and she’s got the killer instinct. She’s got it all.”
The outstanding effort earned Moehn this week’s AdVantage News Athlete of the Week award.
Moehn, who will be a sixth-grader at Saints Peter and Paul School in Alton this fall, helped Summers-Port win its 24th consecutive SWISA championship. The Sharks won the five-team meet with 2,162.5 points.
Last year, Moehn won a High Point award in the 11-12 girls’ division after placing first in four events at the SWISA meet at Paddlers Pool. She won the 100-meter freestyle, 100-meter IM and 50-meter backstroke and helped the medley relay team pick up a win.
Maggie Evans | Diving
A year ago, Evans came up short of a Southwestern Illinois Swim Association diving championship in the 13-14 girls’ division as she placed second in the conference meet at Summers-Port Pool.
At the SWISA meet on July 16 at Paddlers Pool, Evans made sure she didn’t come up short again.
Evans won the 13-14 girls championship for Summers-Port with a score of 145.75 in the three-team conference meet. The effort earned Evans this week’s AdVantage News Athlete of the Week.
Evans was one of four Summers-Port divers — all of them are girls — who won SWISA championships. She also helped the Sharks win their second conference title in a row as they won the meet with 69 points.
The 13-year-old Evans, who will be a freshman at Alton High this fall, competed in the 15-18 division in both dual meets against Sunset Hills and Paddlers. She finished second against Sunset Hills and third against Paddlers.
