Diving | Carsyn Brown
Summers-Port’s Brown cruised to another Southwestern Illinois Swim Association diving championship on July 17.
Brown placed first in the 11-12 girls’ division with a score of 113 in the SWISA Diving Championships at Paddlers Pool in Granite City. She also helped the Sharks win the team championship.
The effort earned the 11-year-old Brown this week’s AdVantage News Athlete of the Week award.
Brown was the only diver to score over 100 in the 11-12 girls’ division. She defeated a pair of Sunset Hills divers to win the title.
Brown finished with an undefeated season in her first year in the 11-12 division. She also placed first in meets against Paddlers and Sunset Hills.
Brown also helped Summers-Port finish with a SWISA regular season title with a 2-0 record.
Baseball | Simon Nguyen
All season long, Nguyen has been a spark plug for the Alton Post 126 Junior American Legion baseball team.
“He has really stepped up and has become a mature leader,” Alton Post 126 manager Dennis Sharp said. “He’s been with me for three years. This is his final year and he’s been down this road three times. He really wants it and he has really become a mature player for our program.”
So far, Nguyen, who pitches and plays right field, has been valuable at the plate for Alton during the postseason.
“He had two big clutch hits in our district tournament and he came up big in the (Fifth) division,” Sharp said. “His nickname is ‘Clutch.’”
Nguyen’s effort helped Alton win both District 22 and Fifth Division tournaments and clinch its first state tournament berth in five years. It also helped him earn this week’s AdVantage News Athlete of the Week.
“I was very happy to win the (Fifth Division) tournament and go on to state,” said Nguyen, who will be a junior at Alton High this fall.
