Golf | Michael Holtz
Holtz will be a senior this fall for the Marquette Catholic boys’ golf team. On June 5, he started off the last summer of his prep career in style.
The 2015 AdVantage News Boys’ Golfer of the Year award winner won the A flight of the Greater Godfrey Open at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Godfrey.
Holtz carded a 144 and won the division by beating Corey Schelle in a playoff. Both players shot 144, but Holtz parred the first playoff hole while Schelle bogeyed it.
“It was awesome,” Holtz said of his victory. “I’m really excited about winning. It’s the best I’ve done in this tournament in three years.”
Holtz will return to the links for the Explorers in the fall as they look to make a repeat trip to the Class 2A state tournament, where they finished seventh in ‘15. They will return the entire squad from last season.
Baseball | Steven Pattan
Pattan recently wrapped up his junior season with the Alton Redbird baseball program.
The AHS starting shortstop earns AdVantage News Athlete of the Week honors after having a strong Class 4A Alton Regional tournament. Despite the Birds losing 2-1 to the visiting O’Fallon Panthers in the regional championship game, Pattan put forth his best efforts to steer the offense.
During the regional semifinals on May 26 vs. Quincy, Pattan paced the Redbirds with a two-run double in their 3-1 victory.
He followed that up with a 2-for-3 performance against O’Fallon and drove in Alton’s only run in the dramatic 2-1 loss. The game ended with AHS’ tying run gunned down at the plate.
“I don’t know how much more this group could have done,” Alton head coach Todd Haug said after the loss to the Panthers. “We went toe to toe with an outstanding team. I think that shows we have an outstanding club as well.”
