Baseball | Blake Vandiver
Vandiver, a recent graduate of Roxana High, will be taking his baseball skills to Lewis and Clark Community College next season. Before he does that, he’s putting together a solid season with the Twin City American Legion baseball team.
The outfielder garners AdVantage News Athlete of the Week honors after compiling an outstanding week last week as well as a very good season thus far.
The South Roxana Post 1167 finished second in the Greater Midwest Baseball Regional Championships in Bridgeton, Mo., on June 18-19 and that came on the heels of besting Jerseyville Post 492 by the score of 7-5 on June 14.
Vandiver went 6-for-12 with a triple, 7 runs scored, 4 RBIs, 5 stolen bases and 3 walks in those games. For the season, he’s batting .371 with 2 doubles, 2 triples, 15 runs scored, 8 RBIs, 9 stolen bases and 8 walks.
Swimming | Jenna Fleming
Fleming batted .1000 against the Sunset Hills Stingrays on June 17.
The 14-year-old Summers-Port swimmer competed in five events and got first place in all of them. She won the 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke and helped the medley and freestyle relay teams pick up wins.
The effort helped the Sharks beat Sunset Hills to improve to 2-0. It also earned Fleming this week’s AdVantage News Athlete of the Week award.
Fleming won the 200 freestyle in 2:16.75, the 100 freestyle in 1:04.06 and the 100 backstroke in 1:17.25. She helped the 200-yard medley relay team win in 2:26.96 and the 200-yard freestyle relay team place first in 2:10.12.
Fleming said out of the all of the events she competes in, the 100 freestyle is her favorite.
“It’s not too long and it’s not too short,” she said. “It’s a good distance.”
