Soccer | Annabelle Copeland
Copeland, a junior for the Marquette Catholic girls’ soccer program, earns AdVantage News Athlete of the Week after finishing up the season in style on May 28 at the Class 1A state tournament in Naperville.
She picked up a hat trick in a 4-2 win over Williamsville, helping secure a Class 1A third-place trophy for the Explorers. It was their first state trophy since getting third in 1A in 2013.
“We keep telling her every game she’s got to do what her God-given talent allows her to do,” Marquette coach Steve Mitchell said. “He gave her the talent to play the game and score goals and she just finally started pushing the ball.”
Copeland finished the season with a team-high 17 goals, 8 assists and 42 points. She tied Elisa Senno for the team lead in assists.
It marked only the second time a player recorded a hat trick in 1A state history; the other was Marquette’s Nicki Wisnasky in the 2011 state championship game.
Track and Field | Jordan Hawkins
Just a sophomore for the Roxana boys’ track and field squad, Hawkins has a bright future in front of him.
He secured fourth place at the Class 2A state meet for the discus on May 28 at Eastern Illinois’ O’Brien Stadium in Charleston.
Hawkins’ throw of 164 feet, 2 inches was good enough to secure his medal. The throw carried over from Friday’s preliminaries.
It marked the first state medal for a Shells’ trackster since Matt Hartnett was fifth in the triple jump in ‘14. It was the highest-ranking medal for Roxana since Josh Coons was fourth in the Class A 400-meter dash in 1994.
“I wanted to get top three, but I’m remembering as a sophomore it’s just awesome to get up on the podium,” he said. “I’m very happy.”
