Baseball | Cody Blacklock
Blacklock, a senior for the East Alton-Wood River baseball team, made his presence felt in a 12-6 win over the rival Roxana Shells March 17 at Norris Dorsey Field in Wood River.
After playing in just 10 games as a junior, Blacklock is now the catalyst for the Oilers, hitting out of the leadoff spot. Against the rival Shells Blacklock sparked EA-WR, going 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs to back a strong performance by teammate Blake Marks on the mound.
“I like hitting from the leadoff spot,” Blacklock said. “This is a huge win for us and I like the way we are getting along and playing together.”
Blacklock earns AdVantage News Athlete of the Week honors for helping the Oilers beat the Shells for the first time since April 28, 2008, when they won 10-6 at home.
Track and Field | LaJarvia Brown
Brown, a senior for the Alton Redbird girls’ track and field team and two-time Class 3A state champion in the triple jump, is kick starting another great campaign.
On March 19 at the Michael Rodgers Invitational at McCluer South-Berkley High in Missouri, Brown helped steer the Redbirds to the team title by winning three individual titles.
AHS compiled 123 points as a team to win the meet. Brown leaped 18 feet, 6 inches in the long jump, went 40-8 in the triple jump and ran a time of 14.59 seconds in the 100-meter high hurdles, winning all three events.
Her time in the high hurdles set a new school record at Alton High.
Teammate Katie Mans also won the title in the high jump, going 5-0.
Next up for the Redbirds are the Southwestern Illinois Relays at Edwardsville at 10 a.m. Saturday.
