Basketball | Blake Marks
Marks, a senior for the East Alton-Wood River Oilers, closed his prep career in big-time fashion Feb. 22 in the Class 2A Dupo Regional.
Marks erupted to score 51 points in a tough 89-75 loss to the host Dupo Tigers to end EA-WR’s season. It was the most points ever scored in a game by an Oiler hoopster. Marks surpassed Mike Stimac’s record set last season with 44 points against Mount Olive.
“It feels good to have a game like that, but I didn’t want to go out the first game of the regional. That’s upsetting,” Marks said following the loss to Dupo.
Marks was 13 of 36 overall from the field against the Tigers, but made just one 3-point field goal. He was 24 of 27 from the free throw line.
Marks finishes his EA-WR career with 1,445 points, second in school history to Dan Coddington’s 1,582 points.
Basketball | Reagan Snider
Just a sophomore for the Marquette Catholic Explorer boys’ basketball team, Snider provided the shot to win the Class 2A Dupo Regional title Feb. 26 at Dupo High.
The Explorers competed in a classic with the rival Roxana Shells, eking out a 48-45 victory in overtime, which was highlighted by Snider’s 3-point basket with 32 seconds remaining in the game. Snider’s trey put Marquette ahead for good at 46-45.
“It’s the biggest shot of my career,” said Snider, a 6-foot sophomore guard who scored 14 points. “I saw an opening at the top of the key, so I took it.”
Roxana head coach Mark Briggs pointed out, “If Snider misses that shot, the game is over.”
Snider supplied good defense too, picking up a couple of big steals in the seesaw battle to help secure the win. The Explorers last won a regional title in 2014.
