Softball | Morgan Moxey
Moxey, a sophomore pitcher for the East Alton-Wood River softball team, enjoyed a pretty stellar week last week with the Oilers.
EA-WR went 4-3 in a whopping seven games last week, while Moxey was 3-2 in the circle.
Her week’s highlight was when she threw a no-hitter against Carrollton on May 5. She threw 6 innings in the 11-0 short-game victory, fanning 10 and not allowing a hit.
Altogether Moxey had 35 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched in five games for the Oilers.
Besides the win over Carrollton, Moxey also logged wins over Roxana and Wesclin for EA-WR, which entered the week 14-17.
She wasn’t too shabby at the plate either, hitting .320 with 4 doubles, 2 triples and 3 RBIs in seven games between May 2-7.
Baseball | Steven Nguyen
Nguyen is a junior for the Alton Redbird baseball team and a key cog in its offense.
In five games between May 2-7, Nguyen compiled a .643 batting average to accompany 3 doubles, a triple and 3 RBIs.
His week at the plate helped the Redbirds go 3-2 and win their 20th game for the fifth year in a row. Entering the week Alton owned a 20-9 record on the season.
His best day was a 3-for-4 day with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs in an 11-6 win over Lindbergh on May 7, the first game of a doubleheader.
Nguyen has proven to be versatile, playing primarily second base as a freshman at AHS, shifting to shortstop as a sophomore and now third as a junior.
On the season, Nguyen was batting .419 with a .552 on-base percentage, .595 slugging percentage, 26 RBIs, 5 doubles and a team-best 4 triples entering this week.
