Girls’ Soccer | Lauren Fischer
Fischer, a sophomore goalie for the Marquette Catholic Explorer girls’ soccer squad, earns AdVantage News Athlete of the Week after a fantastic couple of games last week.
The Explorers won the Class 1A Althoff Sectional with a pair of victories on penalty kicks. On May 18 they beat Gibault 1-0 on PKs and then bested Columbia 2-1 on PKs on May 21 in the sectional title tilt. Fischer was in goal for both wins and did her part to keep Marquette alive in the postseason.
Against Columbia, the PKs were tied 4-4 when Fischer blocked a shot by Madelyn Juenger of the Eagles. It opened the door for Elisa Senno to bury her penalty kick and give the Explorers the sectional championship.
Track & Field | LaJarvia Brown
Brown’s performance at the Class 3A state meet for the Alton Redbird girls’ track and field team was — in one word — phenomenal.
The historic display saw Brown earn 35 of Alton’s 37 points to secure the second-place team trophy for the Birds, the first state trophy in program history. She won her third state title in the triple jump with an all-time best jump of 42-1.75. She tacked on a state crown in the 100-meter high hurdles (13.89), a second in the long jump (19-2.5) and a third in the 300-meter low hurdles (43.47).
“I gave it everything I had and I’m dead tired. But I’m so happy that we got a team trophy,” Brown said after the state meet.
