Baseball | Blake Marks
Marks, a senior for the East Alton-Wood River Oilers, has been a key component in their current hot streak.
Marks pitches and plays third base for the Oilers, which had won 8 out of their last 10 contests entering this week and sported a 10-15 record.
Marks pitched EA-WR past rival Marquette Catholic on April 25 in a pivotal Prairie State Conference showdown at Lloyd Hopkins Field inside Gordon Moore Park.
Marks threw a complete game, fanning six and scattering four hits. He didn’t allow an earned run in the narrow victory.
Through the win over Marquette, Marks was 4-2 with a 0.65 ERA on the hill, while batting a whopping .507 with 4 home runs and 29 RBIs. He also had 8 doubles and 6 triples through EA-WR’s first 24 games.
The Oilers are looking for their first winning season since going 13-9 in 2007.
Track and Field | David Loeffen
Loeffen helped lead the Roxana boys’ track and field team to its second straight Green Division win at the small-school Madison County Meet on April 25 at Roxana High.
Loeffen won the long jump (19-9.5), the triple jump (42-2), the 200-meter dash (23.79 seconds) and ran as the anchor leg of the winning 4x100-meter relay team (44.9 seconds).
“I’ve never had a better day in track,” Loeffen said at the conclusion of the MadCo Meet.
After not winning the MadCo since 1975, the Shells have won the boys’ crown in consecutive seasons.
“Things went really well today for us. It was important to win the county meet again,” Loeffen said of Roxana.
Head coach Juli Akal praised Loeffen’s special day, which helped lead them to the MadCo win.
Akal noted, “There’s something about David that is special.”
