Football | Brayden Young
Young, a junior running back for the East Alton-Wood River football squad, earns Athlete of the Week honors after helping the Oilers have a flair for the dramatic on Oct. 7 at Memorial Stadium in Wood River.
With just 42.7 seconds remaining in a 6-6 tie with Prairie State Conference rival (Kincaid) South Fork, Young ran around the left end and darted into the end zone on a second-and-goal, 2-yard touchdown run. Young then helped the EA-WR defense stave off the Ponies and secure one of the biggest wins inside Memorial Stadium in the last decade.
The Oilers beat South Fork 13-6 to improve to 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the PSC and keep aspirations open for the first playoff berth for the program since 2006.
“That was unbelievable. I’ve never done that before,” Young said of scoring the game-winning touchdown.
Golf | Kolten Bauer
Just a sophomore for the Marquette Catholic boys’ golf program, Bauer garners Athlete of the Week honors after finishing as the medalist at the Class 2A Roxana Regional at Belk Park Golf Course in Wood River on Oct. 4.
Bauer shot a 2-under-70 to lead the field and help steer the Explorers to the regional crown. As a team Marquette shot 293 to win by 58 strokes over runner-up Highland. It marked the fourth regional title in five years for the Explorers.
“I didn’t really expect anything,” Bauer said of his individual regional crown. “I was actually over par for my front nine and then turned it on on the back nine ... I just came out and played my own game and got it done.”
Bauer played the No. 3 spot in the Marquette lineup at regionals. He was only 1 of 5 players who broke 80 in the tournament and three of the others were his Explorer teammates.
