Golf | Drew Sobol
Sobol, a senior for the East Alton-Wood River Oiler boys’ golf team, has compiled a pretty memorable season thus far.
On Sept. 30 at the Prairie State Conference Tournament at Timberlakes Golf Course in Staunton, Sobol fired a par-72 to garner medalist honors. He also was medalist in a quadrangular at Belk Park Golf Course on Sept. 27. His PSC medal marked the 15th time in 2016 that he had earned medalist honors for the Oilers.
Sobol followed that up with a 1-over-73 on Tuesday at the Class 2A Roxana Regional at Belk Park Golf Course. That was the third best individual score, advancing him to the Mattoon Sectional on Oct. 11.
“It’s just a wonderful ride and we enjoy the heck out of it,” his EA-WR coach and father Dave Sobol said earlier in the season. “We do a lot of fist-pumping.”
Sobol has secured 35 medalist wins in his four-year career.
Football | Joey Johnson
A junior on the Roxana Shell football team, Johnson earns AdVantage News Athlete of the Week honors after helping lead the Shells to their first win of the season on Sept. 30.
Johnson rushed for 245 yards and scored 4 touchdowns in a 48-7 rout of Litchfield at Charlie Raich Field. He also produces 23 receiving yards for a whopping 268 total yards from scrimmage in the victory. Roxana is now 1-5 on the season.
It was his second time passing the century mark on the ground this season. Johnson also went for 143 yards in a loss to Vandalia during Week 4.
“It all comes down to the team,” Johnson said following the win. “We’ve been working hard in practice all week. The offensive line has been blocking hard up front. All of our backs have been working hard in practice.”
