Football | John Whitworth
Whitworth, the senior running back for the Civic Memorial Eagles, kicked off the football season in style Aug. 29 at Public School Stadium in Alton against Marquette Catholic.
Whitworth rumbled for 100 yards on the ground and found the end zone three times. One of those scores came via a 77-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The other two came on a 12-yard jaunt and 10-yard plunge.
Whitworth’s performance helped guide the Eagles past the Explorers 50-21 in the season opener.
“It was the best game I’ve had,” said Whitworth, the 6-foot-0, 175-pound tailback.
Whitworth rushed for 312 yards and four TDs, while receiving 292 yards and three more scores as a junior at CM.
Volleyball | Jada Green
Green, a 5-foot-10 senior outside hitter for the Alton Redbirds, has charged out of the gates to start a solid senior campaign for herself.
After dropping their season opener to Columbia, the Redbirds bounced back to defeat Metro East Lutheran and East Alton-Wood River to improve to 3-1 entering the Redbird Classic this weekend.
Green was a major contributor in those two wins. She logged a team-high 10 kills in the win over the Knights on Aug. 26 and seven kills and a block in the victory against the Oilers on Sept. 1. She also had a team-high six kills in the loss to the Eagles on Aug. 24 to give her a total of 23 kills on the season.
Green looks to be a key component in Alton’s quest to repeat as tournament champion of its own event.
