The East Alton–Wood River Oilers ended their season with a hard-fought battle to the buzzer with the Greenville Comets Tuesday night in the Class 2A Regional at the Oilers' Memorial Gym with a final score of 59-54.
The Oilers and the Comets kept a close margin and exchanged leads through the first half. At halftime the Comets found themselves cautious with a narrow three-point lead.
The Oilers fought to keep their season alive against the No. 1 seed until 13.3 seconds remained and they found themselves down by three points.
The Oilers had to use clock management and fouls to gain ball control. With 1.2 seconds on the clock, EA-WR junior Dillon Buck hailed one last shot at the hoop.
Greenville head coach Todd Cantrill complimented the Oilers and the EA-WR coaching staff.
“They came out and played with a lot of heart and played a solid 32 minutes," Cantrill said. “I have to give a lot of credit to the kids (Oilers) and the coaching staff.
“We battled and kept our poise; we didn’t panic,” Cantrill said of the game's closing minutes.
Having just played the Comets five days ago on their home court, the Oilers were able to prepare for the second round of regional playoffs.
“We spread our court out tonight and used some ball screens,” EA-WR head coach Kyle Duncan said. “Our kids seemed to follow the game plan and it worked pretty well.”
For the Oilers, juniors Mike Stimac and Dillon Buck charged the way with both adding up 14 points each, while sophomore Blake Marks added 9.
Greenville senior Devon Leitschuh led the Comets with 13 points, junior Craig Faulkner contributed 12, and three juniors, Will Schaufelberger, Jacob Hall, and Tyler Hutchinson, added 10 points.
The Greenville Comets advance to the regional finals on Friday and will face either the Roxana Shells or the Vandalia Vandals, who face each other at 7 pm. Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the EA-WR Memorial gym.
