Bailey Grinter of Edwardsville finished in a tie for 111th place with Matti Harrison of Phoenix, Ariz., in the preliminaries of the 100-meter backstroke on Monday at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, Neb.
Both Grinter and Harrison finished with a time of 1 minute, 4.10 seconds. There were a total of 155 swimmers who competed in preliminaries.
Grinter will be a senior at Edwardsville High this fall. Harrison, who swims for the Phoenix Swim Club, graduated from Arcadia High School and will be competing in swimming at Harvard University next year.
Grinter, who is a member of the Edwardsville Breakers swim club, will remain in Nebraska for another three days. She will compete in the 50-meter freestyle on Saturday morning.
Grinter is competing in the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials for the first time.
During her junior year at EHS, Grinter earned all-state honors in the 100-meter backstroke and the 50-meter freestyle. She finished fourth in the 100 backstroke and third in the 50-meter freestyle.
Also, Christian Aragona of Godfrey will be competing in the 50-meter freestyle on Friday. He enters the preliminary round with the 83rd best time of 23.06 seconds.
