GODFREY — The Alton Open showcased some pretty good tennis at Alton High School on July 10-12.
The Alton Park and Recreation Department played host to the tournament, which featured 47 entries. All matches were played at AHS.
Brandon Harris of Edwardsville was the champion of the men's open singles division. Harris, a player for Saint Louis University, bested Brett Brannon of Collinsville 6-2, 6-1 in the finals. Brannon was the top seed, while Harris was seeded No. 2 for the tournament.
Kelly Maeda of Wildwood, Mo. won the women's open singles division, defeating Laurie Burke of St. Louis 6-2, 6-0.
In the men's 3.5 singles division, Robert Moore of Ballwin, Mo. beat John Dubuque of St. Louis 6-1, 6-2 in the title tilt.
The men's open doubles winners were, Dylan Faulkenberg of Troy and Jordan Faulkenberg of Edwardsville. They went undefeated in the round robin bracket.
Cindy Bick and Mark Tabscott of St. Louis won the mixed doubles championship, prevailing in the round robin format by going undefeated.
The next big tennis event for the Greater Alton area will be the 18th Annual Lewis and Clark Community College Men’s Pro Tennis Classic beginning play Friday at LCCC. It's a $15,000 challenger tournament on the USTA Men's Pro Circuit. It will feature top tier college players and burgeoning pros. The tournament spans from July 17-26.
