ALTON WINS AFTER LONG LAYOFF — The Alton Redbirds kicked off the 72nd annual Centralia Holiday Tournament with a 70-50 win over Chicago Harlan, but it wasn't always pretty.
Alton hadn't played in nine days and it showed at times in the win over Harlan, even though the Birds were never in danger of losing. They led 17-3 after one quarter and 34-16 at the break. AHS did allow Harlan to win the fourth quarter 23-15, but it was little too late.
Alton improved to 9-1 with the win and now faces Cahokia (6-5) in the quarterfinals of the tournament at 12:30 p.m. today.
The Redbirds were led offensively vs. Harlan with 11 points each from Carlos Anderson and Maurice Edwards, while Darrius Edwards joined them in double figures with 10 points. All-in-all, 11 Alton players contributed points in the triumph.

Blake Marks led the Oilers with a 21-point effort, while Mike Stimac chipped in 12 points.
