Jersey extended its winning ways Tuesday and Civic Memorial returned to the win column.
The 15-9 Panthers won for the third time in five nights by prevailing at Carrollton 66-53 in a nonconference game. And the Eagles, who lost a close encounter last Friday at Jerseyville, responded with a 55-53 Mississippi Valley Conference victory at Mascoutah. The Eagles are 14-10.
Jersey 66, Carrollton 53 – Guard Kyle Steckel scored a game-high 20 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, as the Panthers won in Greene County. Steckel logged 11 points in the second quarter, enabling Jersey to shoot ahead 41-31 at half.
Luke Shively (16 points), Kyle Obertino (12 points) and Jake Varble (12 points) also contributed to the cause for the Panthers. Jersey has three MVC dates remaining, including a home one Friday with Triad.
Luke Palan’s 17 points were best for Carrollton.
CM 55, Mascoutah 53 – Jakob Lowrance hit for 20 points and Jansen Helmkamp pitched in 16 points to propel the Eagles to a key Valley road victory. CM improved to 3-4 in the conference.
It took a pair of Tommy Flack free throws with nine seconds remaining to help CM defeat Mascoutah.
Come Friday, the Eagles will play at East Alton-Wood River in a nonconference game. They still have MVC games remaining with Triad (Feb. 21), Highland (Feb. 25) and league-leader Waterloo (Feb. 28).
EA-WR Class 2A Regional – Powerful Breese Central steamrolled Roxana 80-34 in a semifinal regional game and will play for the championship Thursday night.
Maddy Sheraka’s 20 points led the Shells, who closed at 13-15. Roxana defeated Marquette in a regional quarterfinal Monday, but couldn’t contend with Breese Central, which led 43-13 at half.
The Cougars will tangle with Trenton Wesclin in the championship game. The Warriors upset second-seeded Carlyle 54-42 in Tuesday’s second semifinal.
Litchfield Class 2A Regional – Top-rated Southwestern clashes with Gillespie at 6 tonight, while second-seeded Litchfield clashes with Hillsboro in the second semifinal. Wednesday’s winners advance to the 7 p.m. championship game Thursday.
The regional champion goes on to the Carlinville Sectional and plays the Riverton Regional winner at 8 p.m. Monday.
CM 75, Mascoutah 38 – The Eagles continued their winning ways Monday with a 75-38 victory over Mascoutah. CM, ahead 38-17 at half, improved to 26-2 overall and 8-1 in the Mississippi Valley Conference.
If the Eagles defeat Jersey at home on Thursday, they will share the Valley title, their third in succession.
Guard Lindsey Fencel scored 13 points and collected five assists in the win over Mascoutah. She is now the school’s career assists and steals leader. Allie Troeckler contributed 18 points and nine rebounds. Megan Trost punched in 12 points and Hannah Niemeier had eight assists.
