GODFREY — The Lewis and Clark Community College volleyball team is playing in the Final Four of NJCAA Division II Region 24 competition this weekend.
The 22-15 Trailblazers, seeded No. 4 in the regional, meet top-seeded and 52-0 Parkland of Champaign in a 2 p.m. match Saturday at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield.
It’s 36-5 Lincoln Land, the host team and No. 2 seed, clashing with third-seeded Illinois Central of East Peoria, sporting a 21-19 record, at 4 p.m. Saturday. The regional champion advances to the nationals later this month in Phoenix. Parkland is the No. 1-rated team in the country and already owns two victories over LCCC.
“Parkland will be a challenge, but with the way we are playing, I like our chances,” fourth-year Trailblazers’ coach Jim Hunstein said.
Brooke Hustedde of Trenton spurs LCCC with her play around the net. Freshman Bailey McGuire, a Roxana High graduate, also has made key contributions.
Alhambra’s Molly Stumpf, New Athens’ Denae White and Emma Chidoni of St. Louis joined Hustedde in supplying strong net play Wednesday when LCCC eliminated Lincoln, 25-18, 25-18, 16-25, 25-22. Setters Laura Chiarelli and Kennedy Netters, plus libero Drew Myers, also assisted in the victory. The Trailblazers defeated the Lynx in two of three matches this season.
“One of the keys to our success this year is a balanced attack,” Hunstein said.
