ALTON 2, SPRINGFIELD SACRED HEART-GRIFFIN 0 – The Nick Funk era began Wednesday on a high note.
C.J. Nasello and Sam Van Voorhis each scored goals as the Redbirds (1-0) shut out the Cyclones in Funk’s first game as Alton head coach.
Nasello, who earned all-Southwestern Conference honors last year, and Van Voorhis scored their goals in the first half.
Alton plays Triad at 4:30 p.m. Friday in a first-round game of the Alton Tournament.
CM 6, WESCLIN 2 — The Eagles improved to 2-0 with a victory over the Warriors in their opening game of the Metro Cup Tournament on Wednesday in Freeburg.
Caleb Bassett scored two goals and Parker Calvin, Mikey Stevenson, Kameron Denney and Trevor Paynik each scored a goal for CM, which began its season on Monday with a 7-0 win over Roxana.
The Eagles will play Freeburg at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Metro Cup semifinals at Belleville West.
ALTON 6, MELHS 3 – The Redbirds improved to 2-1 with a home victory over the Knights on Wednesday.
Abby Fischer, Hannah Macias, Sam Clayton, Mackenzie Giertz and Val Walters won singles matches for Alton. The Redbirds got a forfeit win at No. 3 doubles.
Tami Roderick won the No. 4 singles match for Metro-East Lutheran. Cierra Frields and Kathryn Butler won No. 1 doubles and Amber Keplar and Maycen O’Leary picked up a win in No. 2 doubles for the Knights.
The Redbirds will play in the Springfield Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Knights play a road match against Gibault on Thursday.
EDWARDSVILLE 143, COLLINSVILLE 176 — The Tigers began their Southwestern Conference season with a victory over the Kahoks at Oak Brook Golf Course in Edwardsville.
Ben Tyrell shot a 2-under-34 to lead Edwardsville, which was playing its first dual match.
The Tigers also got a 35 from Spencer Patterson, a 36 from Luke Babington and a 38 from Jon Ratterman.
EDWARDSVILLE 173, HIGHLAND 204, TRIAD 205, ALTON 207 — The Tigers cruised to wins over Highland, Triad and Alton on Wednesday in a quadrangular match at Oak Brook Golf Club.
Jessica Benson shot a 42, Paige Hamel fired a 43 and Addy Zeller and Sydney Sahuri each had a 44 to lead Edwardsville.
Morgan Bemis shot a 42, Jenna Fleming had a 49, Paige Wittman fired a 50 and Mariah Bolling finished with a 66 for Alton.
The Tigers play a road match against Belleville East on Thursday at Clinton Hills Golf Course.
The Redbirds will play in the Marquette Catholic Blast-Off Tournament on Saturday at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course. EHS will also participate in the Blast-Off.
ALTHOFF 180, WATERLOO 195, CIVIC MEMORIAL 201, FREEBURG 219 -- Izzy Roberts shot a 42 and Carmen Phillips fired a 44 to lead the Eagles in their quadrangular match against Althoff, Waterloo and Freeburg on Wednesday at Stonewolf Golf Course.
Also for CM, Maisey Watson finished with a 55 and Carmen Ehlers shot a 60.
The Eagles will compete in a triangular match against Roxana and Granite City on Thursday at Belk Park Golf Course.
