REDBIRDS GET WIN – Alton High tuned up for its city girls’ soccer showdown with Marquette Catholic by defeating Freeburg, 2-1, on Tuesday at Moore Park.
The Redbirds overcame a 1-0 deficit to record their first victory of the season. Alton, which is 1-4, tangles with Marquette at 6:45 Wednesday at Moore Park. The Explorers defeated the Redbirds, 2-1, last week at the Metro Cup in Columbia.
Haley Haar scored both goals for the Redbirds, who trailed Freeburg after the Midgets scored in the 28th minute. Her first goal came two minutes later, thanks to a Kristen Funk assist. Then Haar tallied in the 60th minute, with Sofa Macias assisting on the winning goal. Alton outshot Freeburg 18-1.
EAGLES BOW – Visiting Waterloo improved to 4-1 overall by beating Civic Memorial, 2-0, at the Bethalto Sports Complex.
Sydney Luedeman and Emma Novack scored for the Bulldogs in the Mississippi Valley Conference match. The Eagles dropped to 2-2 overall. Waterloo’s only loss it to Edwardsville.
