ALTON SEES SEASON CONCLUDE — A pair of Redbirds held out hope to qualify for the state tournament on Monday in the Class 3A Homewood Flossmoor Sectional at the Balmoral Woods in Crete. Unfortunately they weren't able to advance.
Alex Rubin fired a 92 and Sam Ballard shot a 99 to come up short of the score of 77, which was the cut off for the 10 advancing players on non-qualifying teams.
Edwardsville and Belleville West failed to make it out as teams, but Ty Zeller (73) and Justin Hemings (77) will represent the Tigers individually at state. Edwardsville was fourth in the team standings with a 315, missing third place by two strokes.
REDBIRDS FINISH IN FIFTH AT SWC TOURNEY — Doubles action of the Southwestern Conference Tournament was moved indoors on Monday to get it completed.
The Alton Redbirds slid in at fifth place in the conference tourney with 40 points. The team standings rounded out with: Edwardsville (71), Belleville East (57), Belleville West (49), O'Fallon (48), Alton, Collinsville (28), Granite City (19) and East St. Louis (12).
AHS' No. 1 doubles team of Janelle Wilson and Shannon Willis finished third on Monday, while the No. 2 tandem of Abby Fischer and Mary McDaniel were fifth and the No. 3 duo of Emily Formea and Adele Schenk were also fifth.
Edwardsville swept the doubles flights after winning five of six singles matches. Wilson was the only non-EHS player to win a SWC title at No. 1 singles.
The Redbirds are back in action at 1 p.m. Friday in the Edwardsville Sectional. The sectional will conclude on Saturday.
