The Marquette Catholic Explorers continued their stellar play on Wednesday in Litchfield, outlasting a 50-minute lightning/rain delay to win a quadrangular meet.
The Explorers won the quad at the Litchfield Country Club, firing a 153 as a team to outdistance Roxana (164), Litchfield (183) and Pana (196).
The Explorers received scoring from Michael Holtz (36), Andrew McCluskey (37), Max Goepel (39) and Stephen Elliott (41). Other Marquette linksters to participate Wednesday were: Nick Messinger (42) and Duncan McLain (46).
Roxana's Zach Moore earned medalist honors in Litchfield, shooting a par-35. Holtz finished second to Moore individually.
The Alton Redbirds girls' tennis team kicked off the 2014 season in style on Wednesday with a 13-0 victory over the Metro East Lutheran Knights.
In singles, Janelle Wilson, Shannon Willis, Abbie Fischer, Mary McDaniel, Emily Formea, Addie Schenk, Sydnee Maberry, Katie Cronin, Sarah Hasse and Sarah Fischer all picked up wins.
In doubles, Willis and Abbie Fischer teamed up to win at No. 1, Wilson and McDaniel won at No. 2 and at No. 3 Formea and Schenk paired up to pick up a victory.
Next up for the Redbirds is East-Alton Wood River on the road at 4 p.m. today.
The Civic Memorial girls' golf took second in a quadrangular Wednesday at Cloverleaf Golf Course in Alton.
The Eagles carded a 182, finishing second to Belleville Althoff's 157. Freeburg (191) was third and Waterloo (206) came in fourth.
Sara Gwillim continued her solid play by finishing in a four-way tie for medalist with a 38. Gwillim tied with Althoff's Abigal Irwin and Madison Weilbachen and Waterloo's Haley Faus.
Gwillim was joined in the team scoring for the Eagles by: Allison Hemingway (46), Kayla Slavens (49) and Angie Bailey (50). Lisa Logterman (52) and Molly Stacks (66) also participated on Wednesday.
Alton's quadrangular at Oak Brook Golf Club in Edwardsville which included, EHS, Highland and Triad, was canceled due to rain. There will not be a makeup date for this match.
The Alton Redbirds rallied on Wednesday to improve to 3-0 on the young season.
After earning a spot in the semifinals of the Roxana Tournament on Tuesday, the Redbirds hosted Metro East Lutheran at AHS Wednesday and pulled out a 23-25, 25-14, 25-11 victory.
Megan Paulda led Alton with eight kills and 16 service point, Savannah Fisher had seven kills and 24 digs and Jordan Nolan led with 19 assists.
Alton is back in action at 12:30 p.m. Saturday against Calhoun in the small gym at Roxana.
Heat postponed the soccer match between Civic Memorial and Roxana from Monday to Wednesday at the Bethalto Sports Complex.
The Eagles took advantage of the home field advantage, defeating the Shells 7-0.
