ALTON LOSES TO WEST, BUT WILSON BEATS THURWALKER — On the team front the Alton Redbirds couldn't muster enough to get by Belleville West at home Wednesday, losing 7-2. The Birds made those two wins count though.
Janelle Wilson threw a wrench in the seeding for this weekend's Southwestern Conference Tournament at West, beating Kayleigh Thurwalker of the Maroons 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 singles. Wilson has now beaten Thurwalker, but lost to Edwardsville's Callaghan Adams, while Adams lost to Thurwalker.
Wilson also teamed up with Shannon Willis to prevail at No. 1 doubles, beating Keely Lougeay and Maddie Woodrome 6-0, 6-2 on Wednesday.
The doubles portion of the SWC Tournament will be at West beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday, while the singles action gets going at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Alton's match vs. Roxana for Senior Night scheduled for today has been postponed due to rain. The match has not been rescheduled yet. Senior Night activities will still take place at 4 p.m. today in Room B250 at AHS.
The Redbirds are now 16-9 overall on the season.
ROXANA FALLS TO STAUNTON — The Roxana Shells couldn't solve the surging Staunton Bulldogs Wednesday, losing 25-19, 25-20 on the road.
Staunton improved to 9-7 and 5-3 in the South Central Conference, winning its seventh consecutive match. The Shells slipped to 16-10 and 2-5 with the loss.
Bailey McGuire guided Roxana with a match-high eight kills. She also posted eight service points. Erica Sheets posted six kills and three blocks, while Deb Bethel dished out 10 assists and Morgan Liley had six digs in the defeat.
The Shells are back in action at Marquette Catholic at 5 p.m. today.
