REDBIRDS DEFEAT EXPLORERS – Alton High captured the city championship by defeating Marquette Catholic, 6-3, in Godfrey on Tuesday.
The Redbirds won five of the six singles matches, while the Explorers took two of three doubles bouts.
“We used an all-senior lineup to get a big lead and assure a victory even before doubles play began,” AHS coach Jesse Macias said.
Singles players Carl Stradal, Jackson Scheiter, Kain Henson, Drew Hays and Alex Piazza all prevailed to give the Redbirds a 5-0 lead. Stradal was at No. 1 singles, followed Scheiter, Henson, Hays and Piazza. All of the wins, except the Piazza one, were in straight sets.
Joe Connor of the Explorers scored a victory at No. 6 singles to get Marquette on the board.
In doubles play, Marquette’s Jonathan Claywell and Nick Berkenbile posted a win at No. 1 doubles. Teammates Joe Segneri and Nathan Walters of the Explorers tallied a win at No. 3 doubles. AHS sophomores Silas Chapman and Adam Kane registered a victory at No. 2 doubles.
Both teams are competing in the two-day Alton Sectional that begins Friday. Finals are set Saturday, with the top finishers advancing to next week’s IHSA finals in Chicagoland.
BIRDS BEAT WARRIORS – Host Alton downed Granite City, 25-16, 25-21 on Senior Night for its first Southwestern Conference varsity victory. The Redbirds had defeated Metro East Lutheran of Edwardsville and North County Tech of St. Louis in nonconference matches.
Chris Perkey’s 13 assists paced the Redbirds. Vinny DeFrancesco (six kills and two blocks), Zach Meyer (five kills and a block), Evan Meyer (four kills), Rocky Alderman (three kills) and Robert Davis (three kills) also contributed to the cause.
ALTON BOWS TO O’FALLON – The Panthers bested the Redbirds for the second time this season in SWC play to finish 6-8 in league play. O’Fallon is 11-17 overall.
Alton, sinking to 17-14 and ending 5-9 in the league, has nonconference dates slated Thursday at Jerseyville and Friday at Triad.
The Birds, seeded second behind Edwardsville in the AHS Regional, tangle with third-seeded Quincy on May 27 in a semifinal game.
EXPLORERS FALL TO FREEBURG – Host Marquette managed only three hits and committed four errors in suffering a 4-0 nonconference loss to Freeburg at Moore Park.
The winners scored twice in the fifth and sixth innings and made the most of six hits. Losing pitcher Megan Wittich didn’t allow an earned run as the Explorers dropped to 21-12 and lost their fourth consecutive game. Marquette is scheduled to resume action Wednesday at Collinsville.
EAGLES LOSE TO COLUMBIA – Visiting Columbia kept rolling by bouncing Civic Memorial, 11-2, in a nonconference game at the Bethalto Sports Complex.
The winners improved to 22-3. CM, slipping to 7-19, lost for the 13th time in 14 games. It was the Eagles’ regular season finale.
They are idle until Monday when CM travels to Jerseyville in an 11 a.m. play-in game of the CM Regional. The survivor gets top-seeded Highland on Tuesday in Bethalto.
CM SHADES COLUMBIA – CM, a tri-champ of the Mississippi Valley Conference with Waterloo and Highland, completed its regular-season schedule by registering a 2-1 victory at Columbia.
The 18-14 Eagles play Highland at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, in a semifinal game of the Class 3A Jersey Regional. The Bulldogs are seeded second behind host Jersey, which meets the Marquette-Triad winner at 4 p.m. on May 27.
The Explorers and the Knights play at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 27, at Moore Park.
