CM BEATS MASCOUTAH IN MVC SHOWDOWN — The Civic Memorial Eagles defeated Mascoutah 46-37 Thursday on the road in Mississippi Valley Conference action.
The win improved the Eagles 13-4 overall and 4-1 in the MVC, while the loss dropped Mascoutah to 8-7 and 3-1.
Allie Troeckler paced CM with 22 points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Alaira Tyus chipped in with eight points and Katelyn Turbyfill pulled down 10 rebounds.
Next up for the Eagles is a Jan. 15 showdown with MVC-leading Highland at 7:30 p.m. at CM.
ALTON FALLS TO WEST IN SWC ACTION — The Alton Redbirds came up short on the road Thursday, falling to Southwestern Conference rival Belleville West 54-34.
Alton dipped to 3-11 and 2-5 in the SWC with the loss. The Maroons improved to 12-4 and 4-1 with the victory.
Jewel Wagner directed the offense for the Redbirds, scoring 11 points. Leading scorer LaJarvia Brown was limited to six points, while Megan Paulda chipped in with five.
AHS fell behind 18-8 following the first quarter and never recovered. The Redbirds shot just 30 percent (11 of 36) in the loss.
"It is the same thing, giving up second chance points and too many turnovers,” Alton head coach Bobby Rickman said. “It is hard to win in the Southwestern Conference against these teams with 25 turnovers in a game and allowing your opponent to take 15 more shots.”
The Birds are idle until 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 15 when they travel to Edwardsville to take on the league-leading Tigers.
ALTON DEFEATS BELLEVILLE — The Alton Redbirds skated past Belleville 4-2 on Thursday at the Granite City Ice Rink.
The Redbirds raced out to a 2-0 lead after one period and led 3-0 in the third on their way to improving to 10-3 on the season.
Scotty Waldrup, Jake Cunningham, Alex Rubin and Jordan Myer netted goals for the Birds in the win. Rubin, Jake Bohn and Kain Henson all produced assists.
Next up for Alton is an 8:40 p.m. showdown with O'Fallon at Granite City on Jan. 12.
