EA-WR TOPS MOUNT OLIVE IN THREE GAMES — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers kept their Prairie State Conference title hopes alive on Thursday.
EA-WR bested the visiting Mount Olive Wildcats 25-22, 23-25, 25-19 at Memorial Gym. The Oilers are in a three-way tie atop the PSC.
ROXANA BESTS MARQUETTE ON THE ROAD — The Roxana Shells visited Marquette Catholic High School on Thursday and escaped with a 25-21, 25-21 victory.
With the non-conference win, the Shells improved to 17-10 overall. Marquette sank to 9-12 with the loss.
Lydia Simon led the Explorers with six kills, while Andria Pace and Brittany Pace supplied two aces apiece, Alyssa Herzing dished out seven assists, Brittany Pace had two solo blocks and Katie Gierer gathered seven digs in the loss.
MATER DEI SWEEPS PAST ALTON — The Alton Redbirds headed to Breese for a tough matchup with the powerhouse Mater Dei Knights on Thursday and came away with a loss.
The match started a tough stretch for the soaring Redbirds, which now play O'Fallon (Oct. 13), Edwardsville (Oct. 16) and Belleville West (Oct. 21) before delving into the postseason.
Mater Dei swept the Birds on Thursday, 25-17, 25-10. The win improved the Knights to 24-2, while Alton slipped to 25-4-1 after setting a new program-record for wins on Tuesday.
AHS could only muster eight total kills in two games vs. Mater Dei. Megan Paulda led with three kills, while Savannah Fisher chipped in with two.
ALTON LOSES TO COLUMBIA IN OT — The Alton Redbirds visited Columbia Thursday, but came up a little short.
The host Eagles defeated Alton 2-1 in overtime. The win improved Columbia to 14-3-2. The Birds dropped to 9-5-3 with the loss.
C.J. Nasello logged the goal for AHS in the loss on an assist by Micah Wrigley.
CM FALLS TO MASCOUTAH — The woes continued for the Civic Memorial Eagles on Thursday.
CM fell 5-1 to Mississippi Valley Conference foe Mascoutah after trailing just 1-0 at the break.
The Eagles plummeted to 2-17 overall and 0-10 in the MVC with the loss.
DAY 1 OF SWC TOURNAMENT POSTPONED — The Southwestern Conference girls' tennis tournament was canceled for today in Belleville West.
Singles action of the tournament is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The first round of doubles will begin on Saturday following the completion of singles play and is tentatively set to finish up on Monday.
