MARQUETTE SQUEAKS IT OUT OVER OILERS — Facing tough conditions and an equally tough East Alton-Wood River squad, the Marquette Catholic Explorers were able to lock down their third consecutive Prairie State Conference title on Friday at Timber Lakes Golf Course.
It came to a fifth-score playoff as both Marquette and EA-WR shot 332. Metro East Lutheran was third with a 356.
Drew Sobol of the Oilers was the medalist with a 5-over par 77.
Marquette was led by Michael Holtz (79), while Nick Messenger (83), Andrew McCluskey (85), Max Goepel (85), Duncan McLain (85) and Steve Elliott (88) also contributed.
ALTON BEATS EA-WR IN HOMECOMING GAME — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers celebrated their homecoming on Friday with a soccer match instead of a football game.
After Friday's football game between the Oilers and Metro East Lutheran Knights was canceled when MELHS had to forfeit, EA-WR turned to soccer to celebrate homecoming. Rain then forced the cancellation of Thursday's game against Carlinville and set up a showdown with the Alton Redbirds on Friday.
Even a 2-0 win by Alton couldn't spoil the atmosphere for the Oilers, which saw the soccer program play on the football field for the first time in more than a decade.
C.J. Nasello and Micah Wrigley scored second-half goals for the Redbirds in the win. Assists came from Brett Baldrige and Nick Hatfield. Goalie Shane Bollini earned the shutout.
