CRONIN ADVANCES — Carlee Cronin of the Marquette Catholic High Explorers is state-bound for girls' golf.
The junior shot an 84 at the Class A Ziegler-Royalton Sectional to qualify for the small-school IHSA finals this weekend at Decatur. The Red Tail Course will play host to the Class 1A finals Friday and Saturday.
She was the lone local Class 1A player to make it to state.
Taylor Goodley of Eldorado shot a 1-under-par 71 for medalist honors. Haley Faus, a junior from Waterloo, carded a 76 and joined Cronin as one of individual qualifier.
Sectional champion Belleville Althoff (325), runner-up Eldorado (334) and Massac County (344) advanced their teams to state.
Marquette shot 387 and Civic Memorial shot 397 to miss the cut.
The Explorers were represented by: Cronin, Brittany Barta (86), Hayley Booker (107), Maddie Connors (110), Lauren Walsh (112) and Claire Chappee (112).
The Eagles entered: Sara Gwillim (95), Kayla Slavens (98), Allison Hemingway (99), Lisa Logterman (105), Isabella Roberts (117), Angelina Bailey (124).
Roxana's Andrea Mellenthin missed the cut also, firing a 91 as an individual.
REDBIRDS WIN ON ROAD — Alton High made the most of its soccer trip to Waterloo on Tuesday.
The Redbirds defeated the Bulldogs, 2-1 in a boys' non-conference match and improved to 11-5-3. Alton, 2-3 in the Southwestern Conference, resumes league play Thursday night at Collinsville.
Kain Henson and Alex Piazza punched home goals and Jon Klunk provided an assist in the win at Waterloo. Goalie Shane Bollini also pitched in some sharp defensive work to secure the victory.
AHS now has won four of its last five matches and prevailed or tied in nine of its last 11 contests. The only defeat in that stretch was a 2-1 double overtime loss at Edwardsville.
The Birds will compete in the Class 3A Edwardsville Regional next week. Alton meets Quincy in a semifinal affair at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22. The winner takes on the Edwardsville-Granite City survivor in the championship match.
EXPLORERS BOW TO GIBAULT – Visiting Waterloo Gibault scored a victory over Marquette in a non-conference contest.
The Hawks prevailed 25-19 and 25-14, in the second and third games, respectively, after the Explorers won the first one 25-23.
Taylor Rook (four blocks), Brittany Pace (six aces), Katie Gierer (eight digs), Rachel Pohlman (four assists) and Lydia Simon (two kills) led the 9-13 Explorers. They have lost six of their last seven matches.
EAGLES FALL – Triad downed visiting Civic Memorial, 27-25, 25-19 in a Mississippi Valley Conference match.
The Eagles, now 5-15 overall and 0-7 in the Valley, made a run at the Knights in the first game after trailing 23-14.
Cara Melton (five kills and 13 digs), Saige Gehrs (five kills), Sydney Marshall (10 assists), Summer Standefer (11 digs), plus Kennedy Carnes (seven service points and three kills) led the Eagles.
