EXPLORERS SECURE WIN – Marquette Catholic’s Explorers registered a victory in their Prairie State Conference opener Monday.
The Explorers defeated visiting East Alton-Wood River, 48-36, to improve their record to 2-2. The Oilers are 1-3 after bowing in their league debut.
Brittany Pace and Caitlyn Hanlon spurred the Explorers. Pace, a 6-foot-1 junior, scored 16 points and snared 13 rebounds to lead the way. Hanlon collected 15 points and came up with four steals. She also made all six of her foul shots.
Teammate Andria Pace pitched in with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Marquette once led 35-20, but EA-WR got to within 40-36 in the final three minutes. However, the Explorers held on for the victory.
Courtney Beneke tallied 13 points and Kari Westbrook netted 12 to lead the Oilers.
SHELLS FALL IN SCC -- Roxana lost to Greenville, 41-37, in the Shells' South Central Conference opener. Maddy Sheraka scored 15 points for the 2-2 Shells, who trailed 23-18 at half. Hannah Rexford added nine points.
Roxana is idle until Dec. 1, when it entertains Metro East Lutheran of Edwardsville.
OILERS BOW IN TOURNEY — EA-WR suffered a loss in its season opener at the 34th annual Metro East Lutheran Turkey Tip-Off Classic. The Oilers fell to Freeburg 56-36, the top seed in their three-team Pool D.
It’ll be EA-WR meeting rival Roxana at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night in the Shells’ first tournament game. On Wednesday, the Shells tangle with Freeburg at 8 p.m. The pool winner advances to the Gold bracket competition starting Friday. The runner-up goes to the Silver bracket and the third-place finisher is cast in Bronze bracket play Friday.
The tourney concludes Saturday with the Gold bracket championship contest at 8:30 p.m. Games Tuesday and Wednesday begin at 5 p.m.
ALTON TOURNEY UNDER WAY – Chatham Glenwood and Northwest Academy of St. Louis registered opening-night wins in the Redbirds’ Tip-Off Classic.
Glenwood downed Jacksonville, 45-38, on the Crimsons’ court, while Northwest topped Vashon of St. Louis, 61-51, at AHS.
It’s Vashon pitted against Jacksonville at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday night on the Redbirds’ court. Alton debuts at 7:30 p.m. against Northwest.
On Wednesday, Glenwood takes on Vashon at 5:30 p.m. and Jacksonville is scheduled to play Alton at 7:30 p.m. The Redbirds also will salute their fourth annual Athletics Hall of Fame class during halftime of the basketball game. The newest inductees, featuring nine individuals and one team, will meet at 6 p.m. that night in the AHS commons to celebrate their enshrinement.
REDBIRDS SKATE TO WIN – Alton scored a 4-1 victory over O’Fallon in MHCHA competition at the East Alton Ice Arena.
The flawless Redbirds improved to 6-0 with the victory. The Panthers are 3-2.
Alex Rubin powered Alton by scoring two goals and notching an assist. Jake Cunningham and Kain Henson also got goals. All four AHS goals came on power-play goals. The Redbirds outscore the Panthers 26-16.
