EXPLORERS NAB SHARE – Marquette Catholic secured a share of the Prairie State Conference title Tuesday.
The Explorers rolled by Bunker Hill, 65-37, in Alton. Marquette led 26-0 at the end of the first quarter and 44-7 at half. Marquette improved to 12-4 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
Shandon Boone’s 17 points directed the winners.
If the Explorers can defeat rival East Alton-Wood River on Jan. 30 at Marquette, they will win the PSC championship. The Oilers have lost to league foe Nokomis, which fell to Marquette.
On Friday, the Explorers will welcome Mascoutah in a nonconference game. Then they will compete in the Jersey Tournament that opens Saturday.
The Panthers recorded a 55-33 win over Triad on Tuesday in a Mississippi Valley Conference contest.
SHELLS FALL TO TROJANS – Roxana’s Trace Gentry scored 22 points, but it wasn’t enough as host Madison rambled by the 8-9 Shells.
Jerry Haynes scored 21 points and Dayman Warner netted 19 points for the Trojans, who erupted for 31 points in the fourth quarter. Madison led 40-34 after three quarters and 26-15 at half.
OILERS BOW TO PANTHERS – A strong fourth quarter enabled Litchfield to shade East Alton-River, 46-41, in a nonconference game.
The 5-11 Oilers owned 31-29 advantage after three quarters, but the Purple Panthers outscored them 17-10 in the last quarter. Ryan Howard’s 17 points paced the winners.
Blake Marks (15 points), Joel Biesk (12 points) and Mike Stimac (11 points) powered EA-WR.
REDBIRDS BEAT KAHOKS – Alton outshot Collinsville by a score of 3,408 to 3,035 in Southwestern Conference action at Bowl Haven Lanes.
The Redbirds improved to 10-3 overall and closed the gap with the Kahoks for the conference lead. Justin Amistadi bowled a 665 series to pace Alton. He posted games of 241, 213 and 211. Tyler Stevenson (630), Mat Gorman (616) and Lucas Pejakovic (608) contributed to the cause.
Brandon Boehnke paced Collinsville with a 667 series.
OILERS GET SECOND WIN – EA-WR outshot Metro East Lutheran of Edwardsville by a score of 2,639 to 2,534. It was the second win in two nights for the previously winless Oilers.
Ashtin Wiegand spun a 575 series, best for the Oilers. Seth Stanley added a 565 and Tyler Hayes pitched in a 507.
ALTON GETS KEY WIN –The Redbirds lifted their record to 10-1 and avenged a defeat to SWC rival Collinsville earlier this season. This time, the Redbirds outshot the Kahoks by a score of 3,048 to 3,035 at Bowl Haven Lanes and moved into a first place tie in the conference.
Becca McBride logged a 597 series to guide Alton. She had games of 226 and 223. Eryka Graham (586), Allison Steines (552) and Amanda Menke (506) backed her.
Lizzy Barger had a 698 score for Collinsville and teammate Maddi Juenger registered a 678 total, but it wasn’t enough.
REDBIRDS SCORE WIN – Alton shot its record to 10-4 by logging a 6-0 victory over Collinsville in MVCHA Class 2A North play at Granite City. The Kahoks are 6-6. Edwardsville is 12-0 and leading the North.
Alex Rubin scored twice for the Birds. Jake Bohn, Jake Cunningham, Kain Henson and Brandon Lang added goals. Goalie Tyler St. Peters made 16 saves in getting his second shutout of the season.
