FOSS GUIDES SHELLS PAST CALHOUN — The Roxana Shells got exactly what they needed from junior Chance Foss on Wednesday at home.
Foss walloped a fifth-inning grand slam and drove in six runs to lead the Shells past the visiting Calhoun Warriors 9-2 on Wednesday. The win improved Roxana to 6-5, while the Warriors dipped to 11-7 with the defeat.
Calhoun forged ahead 2-0 before Foss' two-run single in the third put Shells ahead for good at 3-2. He finished 2 for 4 with the grand slam and six RBIs. It was the first homer of his prep career.
Logan Reardon also had two hits and a RBI for Roxana, while Zach Golenor had a double and a RBI at the plate and picked up the win on the mound, tossing six innings, surrendering seven hits, walking three and allowing one earned run. Reardon pitched one inning of relief, striking out one.
The Shells are back in action at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Southwestern with a South Central Conference showdown. They play Civic Memorial in a double header at the Bethalto Sports Complex starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.
CM BOWS TO HIGHLAND — The Civic Memorial Eagles dropped their third straight game Wednesday, falling 10-1 to Highland in a Mississippi Valley Conference action at the Bethalto Sports Complex.
With the defeat the Eagles sank to 4-10 overall and 0-2 in the MVC. The Bulldogs are 11-1 and 1-1.
Highland was highlighted by a six-run fifth inning and led 11-0 before CM scraped across one run in the bottom of the seventh.
Collin Hall took the loss on the hill for the Eagles.
CM is idle until welcoming Roxana for a double header at 10 a.m. Saturday.
HIGHLAND WALLOPS EAGLES — Playing a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Highland on Wednesday, the Civic Memorial Eagles stumbled in 13-0 loss.
The loss dropped the Eagles to 5-6 and 1-1 on the young season. The Bulldogs are 9-2 and 2-0 in the MVC.
CM returns to the field at 4:15 p.m. today, playing host to the Roxana Shells.
SOCCER REGIONAL SITES ANNOUNCED THIS WEEK — The seeds won't be released until later in the month, but at least the Greater Alto area teams will know where they will be playing.
On Tuesday the Alton Redbirds found out they will play in the four-team Class 3A Edwardsville Regional, sharing the pitch with the host Tigers, Granite City and Quincy. The O'Fallon Regional will include Collinsville, O'Fallon, Belleville East and Belleville West. The regionals feed into the Joliet Central Sectional.
In Class 1A, the Civic Memorial Regional will be comprised of the other four Greater Alton area schools with the host Eagles, Marquette Catholic, Roxana and East Alton-Wood River. That regional winner will advance to the Columbia Sectional.
OTHER SPORTS POSTSEASON SITES — Tennis was announced on Wednesday and Alton will play host to an eight-team sectional.
The Birds will be joined by CM, EA-WR, Roxana, Marquette, Edwardsville, Metro East Lutheran and Jersey.
In Class 4A baseball, the Redbirds will be in the Edwardsville Regional with the Tigers, Danville, Quincy and Pekin. The winner there propels into the Bloomington Sectional at Illinois Wesleyan University.
CM and Marquette are in the Class 3A Jersey Regional with the Panthers, Triad and Highland. That regional feeds into the Salem Sectional.
The 2A Dupo Regional includes: EA-WR, Roxana, Belleville Althoff, Dupo, MELHS and Trenton Wesclin. The winner there travels to the Vandalia Sectional.
As for softball, Alton will play host to a Class 4A Regional with Edwardsville, Granite City and Quincy. The winner goes to the Normal West Sectional.
In 3A, CM will host a regional comprised of: the host Eagles, Marquette, Highland, Jersey and Triad. It feeds into the Mascoutah Sectional.
Roxana gets a 2A Regional, playing host to EA-WR, Dupo, Southwestern and Staunton. The winner travels to the Williamsville Sectional.
In boys' track and field, the Redbirds are at the 17-team Class 3A Normal West Sectional. In Class 2A, CM and Roxana head to the 16-team Springfield Lanphier Sectional. EA-WR and Marquette are in the 1A Staunton Sectional.
For girls' track and field, Alton is in the 3A O'Fallon Sectional, CM and Roxana are in the 2A 16-team Springfield Southeast Sectional, while Marquette and EA-WR compete in the 18-team 1A Gillespie Sectional.
In boys' volleyball the Redbirds are the only Greater Alton area school competing and they will host a Sectional, but not before entering the Granite City Regional with East St. Louis, Edwardsville, MELHS and the host Warriors.
