EXPLORERS OPEN WITH WIN OVER GCHS — The Marquette Catholic Explorers opened their season with a solid 11-3 victory over Granite City at home Wednesday.
Freshman Meghan Schorman showcased her talents at the plate and in the circle for the Explorers. Schorman tossed a complete game, fanning 17 in the circle while picking up a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs at the plate. Fellow freshman Tess Eberlin also had two hits and a team-best three RBIs in the win. Senior Megan McClard also notched two hits in the win.
Marquette jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings before the Warriors got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to cut it to 5-2. The Explorers bounced back with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. They also scored three times in the bottom of the sixth.
Marquette is back in action at 4:30 p.m. today at Metro East Lutheran.
EA-WR DROPS GAME TO WATERLOO — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers sank to 1-1 on the young season after losing 11-2 to Waterloo on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs led 1-0 after the top of the first and added three more in the third. EA-WR dwindled it to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth, but Waterloo tacked on three more in the fifth and four more in the seventh to secure the victory. The Oilers committed five errors in the loss.
Senior Victoria Beachum suffered the loss in the circle. She threw seven innings, fanning eight and walking just one. Only five of the 11 runs were earned.
Haley Shewmake paced the offense for the Oilers, banging out two of their five hits in the game. Beachum, Morgan Moxey and Carly Campbell all produced one hit in the loss.
EA-WR returns to action at 4:30 p.m. today at Wesclin.
MARQUETTE TOPS CROSSTOWN RIVAL ALTON — Two late goals lifted the Marquette Catholic Explorers past the rival Alton Redbirds 2-1 on Wednesday in the Metro Cup at Columbia.
Marquette improved to 1-1 with the win, while the Redbirds dipped to 0-2 to start the season.
Alton got a goal from Brianna Hatfield off of a penalty kick early to nab a 1-0 lead, but second-half goals by Adriana Schindler and Lauren Walsh of the Explorers put them on top for good.
Rebekah Johnes and Kate Sanfilippo added assists in the win over AHS. Walsh was tagged with the game-winning goal. Lauren Fischer made nine saves to earn the win in goal.
The Redbirds and Explorers won't wait long to meet again. They are scheduled to play at 6:45 p.m. on March 25 at Gordon Moore Park.
Before that, Marquette battles Columbia at 2 p.m. Saturday in the consolation championship match at Columbia High School. Alton faces Highland at 4 p.m. Saturday at Oerter Park for 11th place in the Metro Cup.
EA-WR LOSES TO FREEBURG — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers opened the season with a 3-0 loss at Freeburg on Wednesday.
The Midgets (2-0) scored once in the first half and twice in the second half to lock down the victory.
EA-WR has its home opener set for 4:15 p.m. Friday vs. Breese Central.
EXPLORERS STUMBLE AT O'FALLON — The Marquette Catholic Explorers opened their season Wednesday with a tough task against the O'Fallon Panthers of the Southwestern Conference.
Marquette hung tight, keeping the game at a stalemate until the fifth when the Panthers scored four times. It proved to be all they would need, blanking the Explorers 4-0.
O'Fallon's Bradley Harrison earned the win on the mound, while Marquette's Max Goepel was tagged with the loss.
The Explorers logged three hits and committed two errors in the loss.
Marquette is back in action with a double header at Granite City beginning at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
