REDBIRDS BLAST BELLEVILLE – Kain Henson of the Alton High ice hockey team made it a memorable Senior Night for the Redbirds on Tuesday.
He scored three goals in leading them by Belleville, 8-2, at the East Alton Ice Arena. The Redbirds improved to 12-4 and tuned up for the MVCHA playoffs in a winning way.
The playoffs will begin following the league All-Star games Monday and Tuesday.
Alton honored 10 seniors, including Jordan Klope, who died in an automobile crash two years ago during his sophomore season. He was honored in a pre-game ceremony.
Once the game got going, it was all Redbirds. In addition to Henson’s three goals, Alex Rubin, Jake Cunningham, Anthony, Pellegrino and Jake Bohn (twice) added scores. AHS goalies Tyler St. Peters and Mitchell Klug protected the lead.
The Redbirds meet Collinsville in the first round of the Class 2A North playoffs. East Alton-Wood River, Bethalto and Marquette will compete in the Class 1A playoffs. Bethalto meets Granite City at 7:15 p.m. Thursday in a regular-season game at East Alton, while Marquette faces Jerseyville at 8 p.m. Thursday in Granite City.
EXPLORERS BOW AT TOURNEY – Calhoun showed Tuesday why it’s the top seed in the 41st annual Carrollton Tournament.
The top-seeded Warriors rolled past the Explorers, 66-22 in a quarterfinal game of the tournament that concludes Saturday. Calhoun advanced into the semifinals against North Greene, which surprised No. 4-seeded Calhoun, 49-41.
So Calhoun and North Greene will play at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the first semifinal. Marquette goes to the fifth-place bracket and battles Brussels at 6 p.m. Friday.
Civic Memorial, the No. 2 seed, faces Mississippi Valley Conference rival Jersey at 6:30 p.m. tonight in a quarterfinal game. Then third-seeded Winchester West Central and Brussels square off at 8 p.m. Metro East Lutheran clashes with Granite City in a consolation quarterfinal round game at 5 p.m. tonight.
The tourney continues Thursday and Friday. Saturday’s championship game is set for 7:30 p.m.
EAGLES FALL IN BREESE – Host Mater Dei overpowered Civic Memorial, 74-31, in a nonconference game and dropped the Eagles to 12-8 on the season. The Knights lifted their record to 15-8.
Jakob Lowrance scored 14 points and snared five rebounds to pace the Eagles, who were beset by 19 turnovers. Lowrance tallied 31 points Saturday in CM’s win over Mount Zion for third place in the Litchfield Tournament.
Mater Dei hit 19 of 27 shots the first half in building a 46-16 lead. Ben Lampe’s 21 points paced the winners. The Knights once led 66-26.
CM gets back into Mississippi Valley Conference competition Friday when the Eagles play host to Waterloo. They will play Cairo on Saturday in the Pinckneyville Shootout.
Jersey shaded Mascoutah, 48-47, on Tuesday to maintain its share of the Valley lead with Highland.
