ALTON, MARQUETTE AND ROXANA DONE AT STATE — Alton's Janelle Wilson, Marquette Catholic's Shelby Jones and the Roxana duo of Georgia and Anna Ballard all have seen their state hopes come to an end.
Wilson turned in the best effort, advancing to today, but losing in a fourth round consolation match. Wilson won her first two matches, beating Gabby Ochalik of Plainfield North 6-2, 6-2 and Molly Nguyen of Mattoon 6-0, 6-2. She then lost her third round bout to Karyna Bihel of Gurnee Warren 6-1, 6-1 to end Thursday action.
Wilson came back today in the consolation's fourth round, but unfortunately fell to Gaby Schoenberg of Fox Lake (Grant) 6-4, 6-4 to see her season and prep career come to an end.
Jones, a freshman at Marquette, went 1-2 at state. Jones lost in the first round to Kelsey Neville of Antioch by the score 6-2, 6-1. She recovered to top Madison Scaggs of Champaign Centennial 1-6, 6-0, 6-1, but then lost in the second round of consolation matches to Hannah Davis of Providence Catholic 6-1, 6-2.
The Ballard sisters, juniors for the Shells, were unable to pick up a win at state. They lost 6-3, 7-6 to Lauren Hogan and Sarah Van Hoe Rock Island Alleman and then 6-2, 6-3 to Serena George and Natalia Rojszyk to Palos Hills Stagg.
Locally, Edwardsville's Callaghan Adams is still alive in singles, while the EHS tandem of Emily and Maddie Lombardi are still playing as well as Triad's Alexis and Kylie McCarthy.
ALTON FALLS TO SWC CHAMP BELLEVILLE WEST — The Belleville West Maroons closed out their perfect run through the Southwestern Conference Thursday at Alton High School.
The Maroons cruised past the Redbirds 25-17, 25-5 to improve to 30-5 and 7-0 in the SWC. Alton dropped its fourth straight match, finishing the regular season at 25-7-1 and 3-4 on the league docket. It's the first outright SWC title for West since 2005.
The Redbirds, which set a school-record for wins in 2014, will now prepare for the postseason. They open with Springfield at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Class 4A Edwardsville Regional.
Jada Green led Alton on Thursday with four kills, while Savannah Fisher and Kailin Haug each had three kills.
MARQUETTE TAKES DOWN MADISON — The Marquette Catholic Explorers welcomed Madison on Thursday and picked up a 23-25, 25-15, 25-10 victory.
The Explorers raised their record to 10-14 with the win. It was the last game of the regular season for Marquette, which opens postseason play with a 5:30 p.m. match vs. East Alton-Wood River on Monday in the Class 2A EA-WR Regional.
Anna Daugherty led the way with five kills, while Rachel Pohlman had six aces and four assists, Alyssa Herzing had one block and Kalie Buecker gathered eight digs.
