SCHORMAN NO-HITS GREENVILLE IN MARQUETTE WIN — The Marquette Catholic Explorers are happy with what they are getting out of their freshman pitcher Meghan Schorman. That was evident on Thursday.
The freshman hurler no-hit Greenville, as the Explorers trounced the Comets 12-0 in five innings. Marquette improved to 11-4 with the victory. It was the Explorers' fourth straight and sixth out of their last seven.
Schorman dominated, fanning 12 and walking one on 70 pitches, 51 for strikes.
Offensively, Emma Taylor was 3 for 3 with two doubles and a RBI to lead the way. Kalie Buecker had two RBIs in the win, too.
Next up for the Explorers is an 8:30 a.m. contest at Jerseyville on Saturday.
ALTON POUNDS EAST SIDE — The Alton Redbirds welcomed the East St. Louis Flyerettes to AHS on Thursday and pulled out a 19-0 five-inning Southwestern Conference win.
With the win the Redbirds improved to 5-6 overall and 1-4 in the SWC.
Alton now heads to East Alton-Wood River at 4 p.m. today.
EA-WR GETS BY JERSEY — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers played host to the Jersey Panthers in a nonconference contest Thursday and came away with a 10-3 victory.
The Oilers improved to 6-10 with the triumph.
SIUE recruit Victoria Beachum directed EA-WR in the circle, tossing seven innings and striking out eight while giving up three runs on eight hits.
Beachum also led the offense with three hits and three RBIs.
Next on the docket for the Oilers is a 4 p.m. home contest today vs. the Alton Redbirds.
ALTON BLASTS FLYERS — The Alton Redbirds went to East St. Louis on Thursday and blasted the Flyers 16-1 in a Southwestern Conference showdown.
With the win, the Redbird elevated their record to 11-2 overall and 3-1 in the SWC.
Bryan Hudson enjoyed a great day at the dish for the Birds, going 3 for 4 with a pair of triples and three RBIs. Other offensive standouts were: Steven Pattan with two hits and four RBIs, Drake Hampton with two hits and three RBIs and Jacob Skrabacz with a pair of RBIs.
On the hill, Sam Ballard threw a no-hitter over five innings of work. He struck out 12 and walked just one while allowing one unearned run.
AHS has a double header on Saturday, playing Saint Louis University High at McCluer North High School at 11:30 a.m. and host McCluer North at 2:30 p.m.
MARQUETTE BESTS GREENVILLE — The Marquette Catholic Explorer secured their third straight win on Thursday at Greenville, beating the Comets 8-4.
Marquette improved to 7-8 with the win.
John Hughes garnered the win on the mound for the Explorers. Danny Holtz had two hits and two RBIs at the plate, while Liam Maher led the way with three RBIs.
Next up for Marquette is its Busch Stadium game at 5 p.m. Saturday vs. Hillsboro.
COLLINSVILLE BLANKS ALTON — The Alton Redbirds fell 3-0 to the Collinsville Kahoks in Southwestern Conference action on Thursday in Collinsville.
The Redbirds dropped to 4-8-0 overall with the loss and 0-3 on the league slate. The Kahoks improved to 9-1-1 and 5-0 in the SWC.
Collinsville scored once in the first half and twice in the second half to cruise to the win.
Alton is now idle until 6:45 p.m. on April 28 when it welcomes Mater Dei to Gordon Moore Park.
MARQUETTE CRUISES PAST LITCHFIELD — The Marquette Catholic Explorers cruised past Litchfield 7-1 on Thursday.
Marquette ran its record to 6-2-2 with the win.
Adriana Schindler posted three goals to pace the Explorers in the win. Kate Sanfilippo added two goals in the win, while Bailey Hartrich and Amanda Murray each scored once. Marquette led 4-0 at the break.
The Explorers next play Roxana at 4:30 p.m. Monday in Wood River.
ROXANA FALLS TO CAVALIERS — After being tied 1-1 at half, the Roxana Shells watched as the Carlinville Cavaliers netted two second-half goals to win 3-1 at the Wood River Soccer Park on Thursday in South Central Conference action.
Roxana sank to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the SCC with the loss.
Sophomore Sydney Owsley scored the lone goal for the Shells on Thursday.
Roxana returns to the field at 4:30 at home Monday playing host to the Marquette Catholic Explorers.
MARQUETTE TOPS COLLINSVILLE 8-1 — The Marquette Catholic Explorers traveled to Collinsville and prevailed 8-1 on the tennis court.
Marquette improved to 3-3 with the win, while the Kahoks slipped to 0-4.
Nick Berkenbile, Jon Claywell, Nick McCune, Peter Wendle, Alex Cousley and Thomas Morrissey all picked up wins in singles action for the Explorers. In doubles play, Berkebile and Claywell and the duo of Cousley and McCune secured victories.
Marquette is back in action at 4 p.m. Wednesday at East Alton-Wood River.
EDWARDSVILLE BESTS ALTON IN SWC PLAY — The Alton Redbirds stumbled on Thursday in Edwardsville, losing 25-9 and 25-7 in Southwestern Conference action.
Alton, in its first season of varsity play, fell to 1-5 overall and 0-5 in the SWC with the defeat.
Rocky Alderman had two kills while Vincent Defrancesco had the other of AHS' three kills in the match. Alderman and Conner Peckham had blocks for the Birds in the loss.
Alton is next in action at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday at Granite City.
