MARQUETTE USES SIX-RUN SECOND TO FORGE PAST OILERS — The Marquette Catholic Explorers headed to East Alton-Wood River on Monday for a Prairie State Conference showdown and escaped with a 10-2 victory.
With the win, the Explorers improved to 9-9 overall and 2-1 in PSC play. The Oilers skidded to 4-21 overall and 1-2 on the league slate.
Max Goepel picked up the win on the mound for Marquette. Blake Marks suffered the loss on the hill for EA-WR.
Danny Holtz compiled four hits for the Explorers to pace the bats. Nate Siener and Liam Maher added three hits each, while Brady McAfee drove in three and Maher picked up two RBIs in the victory.
A six-run second for Marquette broke a 1-1 tie and paved the way for the win.
Next up for the Explorers is a 4:30 p.m. game Wednesday at home against Roxana. The Oilers are back in action at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Southwestern.
CM SQUEAKS BY MASCOUTAH 1-0 — The Civic Memorial Eagles squeaked out a big 1-0 Mississippi Valley Conference win at Mascoutah on Monday.
With the victory, the Eagles elevated their record to 11-13 overall and 2-3 in the MVC. The Indians slipped to 13-8 and 2-3 with the loss.
Zac Cato garnered the win on the hill for CM.
The Eagles have another big MVC contest at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday when they welcome Jersey to the Bethalto Sports Complex.
REARDON CARVES UP CARLINVILLE IN ROXANA WIN — Roxana senior ace Logan Reardon tossed a one-hitter as the Roxana Shells blanked the Carlinville Cavaliers 4-0 at home on Monday.
The Shells improved to 9-10 overall and 4-1 in the South Central Conference with the triumph.
Reardon went the distance, surrendering the one hit, while fanning 11 and walking two.
Randy Skiff guided the offense for Roxana with a 2 for 3 day and two RBIs. Tanner Davis had a double and a RBI in the win, too.
The Shells' scoring came with one run in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Roxana will now play Marquette at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday inside Gordon Moore Park.
ROXANA BLANKS CARLINVILLE — The Roxana Shells rode the talented arm of freshman Hannah Rexford in a 2-0 win over the Carlinville Cavaliers on Monday.
Rexford's two-hitter propelled the Shells to 8-14 overall and 3-2 in the South Central Conference.
Roxana's freshman hurler went the distance, fanning nine and walking no one while scattering the two hits.
Rexford helped herself out with two hits, while also scoring both of the Shells' goals. Cindy Scroggins had a hit and a RBI in the win, too.
The Shells next travel to Red Bud at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
CM FALLS TO MASCOUTAH IN NINE INNINGS — The Civic Memorial Eagles dropped their fifth straight game Monday in a 12-7 loss to Mascoutah in nine innings at the Bethalto Sports Complex.
The struggling Eagles slipped to 6-11 and 1-4 in the Mississippi Valley Conference with the loss.
CM led 2-1 after three innings and after the Indians plated four in the top of the sixth, the Eagles scored three times in the home half of the inning to knot it at 5-5. That's the way it remained until the top of the ninth when Mascoutah erupted for seven runs. CM scored twice more in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn't enough.
Ryan Allison, filling in for the sidelined Shelby Whaley, took the loss in the circle. Allison pitched all nine innings, surrendering 17 hits and 12 runs, eight earned, and struck out three and walked four.
Cassie Albers had three hits and a RBI in the loss, while Katelyn Turbyfill slugged a home run, Chloe Jennings cracked a pair of doubles and Kelsey Deaton had two hits and a RBI in the loss.
The Eagles now head to Jerseyville at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday to battle the Panthers in a MVC showdown.
ROXANA POUNDS GILLESPIE — The Roxana Shells went on the road Monday and pounded the Gillespie Miners 7-1 in South Central Conference action.
The Shells are now 8-5 and 2-3 in the SCC.
Roxana led 2-1 at the break Monday and then erupted for five second-half goals.
Emma Lucas led the charge with three goals, while Sydney Owsley had two goals and an assist, Haley Milazzo had two goals, Brittany Alexander dished out three assists and Niah Bevelo, Alyssa Copland and Samantha Hurst each had one assist.
Hurst logged the victory in the net for the Shells.
They return to SCC action at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, playing host to Southwestern.
MARQUETTE STUMBLES VS. GREENVILLE — The Marquette Catholic Explorers stumbled at home Monday in a 7-2 loss to visiting Greenville.
Nick Berkenbile and Jon Claywell picked up the two wins for the Explorers at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Berkenbile won 6-2, 6-4, while Claywell prevailed 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.
Peter Wendle put up a valiant fight at No. 3 singles for Marquette, falling 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 10-8. Berkenbile and Claywell went three sets in their loss at No. 1 doubles also, ultimately losing 4-6, 6-4, 10-2.
The Explorers now head to Highland at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
