MARQUETTE OPENS THE SEASON WITH A WIN — The Marquette Catholic Explorers opened their 2014 season in style on Tuesday.
The Explorers blanked East-Alton Wood River 9-0 on the road Tuesday. The Oilers dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
In singles action Marquette got wins from: Shelby Jones, Laura Moore, Elana Gable, Adri Ventimiglia, Claire Snider and Abbi Simonds. In doubles wins came from: Moore and Ventimiglia, Snider and Simonds and the tandem of Mallory Maag and Megan Bell.
Next on the docket for the Explorers is a 4 p.m. match at Mascoutah on Thursday. EA-WR welcomes Hillsboro at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
ALTON DOWNS JERSEY — The Alton Redbirds traveled to Jerseyville on Tuesday and came away happy.
The Redbirds improved to 3-0 on the young season after defeating the Panthers 6-3.
In singles action, AHS got wins from: Janelle Wilson at No. 1 by the score of 6-0. 6-0, at No. 2 from Shannon Willis 6-2, 7-6, Abby Fischer prevailed at No. 3 7-6, 6-7, 11-9 and at No. 6 Sofia Macias came out on top 2-6, 6-2, 10-4.
In doubles play, the Redbirds picked up victories from: Wilson and Mary McDaniel at No. 2 with a score of 6-1, 6-1 and at No. 3 from Sydnee Maberry and Katie Cronin by the score of 6-4, 7-5.
Next up for Alton is a trip to Belleville Althoff at 4 p.m. today.
ALTON SWEEPS EA-WR — The Alton Redbirds continued their solid season on Tuesday at East Alton-Wood River.
The Redbirds picked up a 25-16, 25-20 win over the Oilers to improve to 5-1 on the young season. EA-WR slipped to 1-5 with the loss.
Alton was led by Jordan Nolan with 19 assists, Rachel Cauley with eight kills, Savannah Fischer with six kills and 15 digs and Megan Paulda with 12 service points.
Next on the docket for AHS is playing host to the Redbird Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Redbirds open with Gillespie at 4:30 p.m. and Triad at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Play continues for Alton with a 9 a.m. match vs. Granite City on Saturday, an 11 a.m. bout with Southwestern and finishes up with a 1 p.m. match against Orchard Farm.
The Oilers are idle until Sept. 13 when they play host to the EA-WR Tournament.
ROXANA TAKES DOWN HILLSBORO — The Roxana Shells played host to Hillsboro Tuesday and came away with their first South Central Conference triumph.
The Shells swept the Hiltoppers 25-22, 25-22 to improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the SCC.
Bailey McGurie highlighted the offense with 10 kills, while Deb Bethel paced it with 13 assists.
Roxana gets back on its home court vs. Vandalia at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
MARQUETTE STUMBLES VS. LITCHFIELD — The Marquette Explorers came up short at home Tuesday playing host to Litchfield.
The Purple Panthers outlasted the Explorers 25-16, 26-24 in the match, dropping them to 2-3 thus far on the season.
In the loss, Marquette got seven total blocks from Taylor Rook, including four solos and three assisted, seven assists from Alyssa Herzing, seven digs and two aces from Katie Gierer and four kills from Anna Daughtery.
Next up for the Explorers is a 7 p.m. match tonight vs. Civic Memorial at home.
CM COMES UP SHORT AGAINST JERSEY — Civic Memorial traveled to Jerseyville on Tuesday and came up a little short in a 2-1 loss.
The Panthers scored a pair of first-half goals to outlast the Eagles. Brett Dietrich picked up a second-half goal for CM on an assist by Kameron Denny.
CM is back in action at 4:15 p.m. Thursday at Highland.
MARQUETTE BLANKS LEBANON — The Marquette Explorers made quick work of the Lebanon Greyhounds on the road Tuesday.
Marquette scored once in the opening half and then exploded for six goals in the second half and blanked Lebanon 7-0.
Zach Weinman led the way with two goals and an assist. Jacob File scored a goal and had an assist, Riley Velloff logged a goal and an assist, Collin Dunn, Adam Hammond and Nate Siener all scored goals and Daniel Hartzell and Tommy Morrissey each picked up an assist.
Brandon Sanfilippo picked up six saves in goal to help secure the shutout win.
The Explorers are now 1-2 on the young season.
Marquette is back in action at 6:30 p.m. today at Gibault.
