REDBIRDS FINISH THIRD IN ALTON TOURNEY — The Alton Redbirds boys' soccer team performed well as the host of the Alton Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Gordon Moore Park in Alton.
Alton went 1-1-1 in three games to secure third place in the tournament. Edwardsville won the tournament while Triad finished second.
After dropping a 2-0 game to Triad on Friday, the Redbirds bounced back with a 2-1 victory over Dunlap and then tied the defending Class 3A state champion Tigers 2-2 in the last game of the tourney.
The Redbirds got goals from Micah Wrigley and Drew Hays in the game against Edwardsville. AHS owned a 2-1 lead in the game with 3:55 remaining in the game when EHS' Landon Paul booted his second goal of the game to knot it at 2-2. The chippy game included eight yellow cards, four on each side.
Edwardsville won the tourney with a 2-0-1 record while Triad went 2-1-0 and Dunlap was 0-3-0.
Next on the docket for the Redbirds is their Southwestern Conference opener at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday vs. Granite City at Moore Park.
EA-WR WINS TWO TO START CARLINVILLE TOURNEY — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers kicked off the Carlinville Tournament in good fashion Saturday.
The Oilers stymied Athens 4-0 and followed that up by blanking Litchfield 5-0. They are now 3-0 on the young season.
In the win over Athens, EA-WR got two goals from Devon Gilreath and a goal apiece from Luke Sims and David Barrett. Barrett and Dalton Miller each picked up an assist.
Against Litchfield, the Oilers received scoring in the form of two goals from Sims and single goals from Gilreath, Josh Turner and Brendan Augustyn. Assists came from Gilreath, Sams and David Barrett.
Nick Barrett earned both shutouts in goal. He logged two saves vs. Athens and one against the Purple Panthers.
ROXANA FINISHES SECOND IN THE ROXANA TOURNAMENT — The Roxana Shells made it to the finals of their own tournament on Saturday, but came up a little short of a championship.
Roxana fell 25-15, 25-19 to Calhoun in the Roxana Tournament finale. In the sixth edition of the annual tournament the Shells are still looking for their first tourney championship.
To earn its spot in the finals Roxana bested Marquette Catholic 25-13, 25-19 in the semifinals. The other semifinal saw Alton fall 25-15, 22-25, 15-8 to Calhoun in three sets.
Alton then recovered to beat the Explorers 25-10, 25-10 in the third-place match.
The final standings for the tournament were: Calhoun in first, Roxana second, Alton in third, Marquette fourth, Jersey in fifth, Mount Olive in sixth, Bunker Hill seventh, Altamont in eighth, EA-WR in ninth, Gillespie 10th, Dupo 11th and Madison finishing in 12th.
