ANOTHER SHUTOUT FOR REDBIRDS – Alton posted its third shutout of the week as the Redbirds blanked host Granite City, 7-0, in a Southwestern Conference game.
Brittany Roady tossed a three-hitter and struck out 11 in twirling her second shutout in three days. She also blanked host O’Fallon, 2-0, on Tuesday. The Birds then won 18-0 at Cahokia on Wednesday. So they haven't allowed a run in 19 innings.
Savannah Fisher belted a three-run home run against Granite City. Katelyn Presley doubled and tripled and had two RBIs.
The latest win enabled the Birds to lift their record to 9-7 and give them their fifth win in their last six games.
They are 3-4 in the SWC and scheduled to play at Civic Memorial on Friday in a nonconference contest. Alton also is at Southwestern on Saturday to complete a week of five road games.
Granite City dipped to 4-17 and 1-6. The Warriors will play at Alton on Saturday, May 2, in the Redbirds’ tournament.
EA-WR WINS BIG – It proved to be a pleasurable trip to Staunton for the Oilers. They scored a 12-1, six-inning nonconference victory and improved to 8-13. The Bulldogs dropped to 6-5.
Senior lefty Tori Beachum struck out 10 and allowed four hits. She also drove in two runs. Teammate Haley Shewmake was 2-for-4 with four RBIs and scored three times. Peyton Young went 3-for-3 and Courtney Beneke hit a home run for the winners.
SHELLS BOW TO KAHOKS – Collinsville rolled by Roxana, 5-1, in a nonconference test. The Shells saw their record sink to 7-13.
OILERS FALL AT MELHS – Blake Marks yielded one earned run in six innings, but the visiting EA-WR Oilers lost to the Knights, 4-3. Jake Hei was 1-for-3 and drove in three runs for the Oilers, now 4-19. Metro East Lutheran pushed its record to 6-9.
INDIANS DEFEAT SHELLS – Host Mascoutah got its offense going in high gear to defeat Roxana, 8-1, in a nonconference game. The Shells fell to 8-9, while the Indians improved to 11-7.
EAGLES SNARE VICTORY – Civic Memorial scored a 4-0 win at Staunton in a nonconference match. The Eagles, winning their fourth in a row, improved to 8-6. They have outscored their foes 24-3 during that stretch. The Bulldogs dipped to 8-6.
SHELLS SNAG WIN – Visiting Roxana used a strong defense and solid offense to down Breese Central, 4-0, in nonconference play. The Shells hiked their record to 7-5. The Cougars fell to 3-8.
EXPLORERS BOW IN TOURNEY – Host Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin shaded Marquette Catholic, 2-1, in the opening day of the Cyclones’ weekend tournament.
The Explorers, who are scheduled to play again Friday and Saturday, saw their record go to 8-3-2. They are the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Class 1A CM Regional. The Eagles are seeded second, followed by Roxana and EA-WR.
KAHOKS TOP WARRIORS – Southwestern Conference leader Collinsville shut out Granite City and shot its league mark to 6-0. The Kahoks improved to 10-2 overall. The Warriors dropped to 4-7 and 1-3.
