REDBIRDS FALL IN THRILLER — Alton pushed visiting East St. Louis to the limit, but the Flyers won two of three games from the Redbirds on Tuesday night.
East St. Louis won the first game, 25-17, before Alton scored a 25-20 victory in the second game. The Flyers then won the decisive third game by a 26-24 score.
Zach Meyer collected six kills and six blocks to spur the Redbirds. Connor Peckham added five blocks. Vinny DeFrancesco had 10 assists.
The loss dropped the Redbirds to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the Southwestern Conference. Alton is scheduled to resume conference competition at 5:45 p.m. Thursday at O’Fallon.
WARRIORS BEATEN — Edwardsville swept past host Granite City in a two-game SWC match and boosted their record to 6-2. The Tigers improved to 3-0 in the SWC. The Warriors fell to 1-2 and 0-2.
REDBIRDS WIN QUAD — Alton scored 123 points to finish first in a four-school meet at Carrollton. The Redbirds tallied 123 points. Carrollton finished second with 50 points, followed by Greenfield with 35 points and Madison with 22 points.
Alton won nine events in all, with LaJarvia Brown and Katie Mans leading the way. Brown won the 100-meter high hurdles in 15.5 seconds and also anchored the 4x100-meter relay, first in 52.6. Kimbreon Knight of AHS was tops in the 300-meter low hurdles at 50.1. Mans won the high jump at 4-8 and triple jump at 32-1. She also ran legs on the victorious 4x200-meter relay, champ in 1:54.30 and 4x400-meter relay, best in 4:30.5.
Teammate Alexis Meyer had the top discus throw of 82-4 and Jewel Wagner won the shot with a heave of 37-3.
The AHS girls will compete Friday in the Jersey Relays, set to start at 4 p.m.
GRANITE BOWS – Host O’Fallon edged Granite City, 2-1, and lifted its overall record to 6-1-3. The Panthers are 2-0 in the SWC.
The Warriors slipped to 2-3-1 and 0-1. Granite City is scheduled to play in the St. Joseph’s Academy tournament in St. Louis on Friday and Saturday.
