REDBIRDS WIN AGAIN — It was a record-setting night Tuesday for the Alton High volleyball team.
The Redbirds defeated host Granite City, 25-8 and 25-15, in a Southwestern Conference match for their 25th victory of the season. Alton, now 25-3-1, established a school record for wins. The 2008 team went 24-9.
Jada Green contributed nine kills, six service points and six digs to lead the Redbirds, now 3-1 in SWC competition. Megan Paulda collected 15 service points, eight digs and four kills. Jordan Nolan had 14 assists and nine service points. Rachel Cauley had seven digs, four blocks and two digs.
The Redbirds are back in action Thursday at Breese Mater Dei. They have league dates remaining with O’Fallon (Oct. 14), Edwardsville (Oct. 16) and Belleville West (Oct. 23). The O’Fallon and Belleville West matches are at AHS.
EXPLORERS PREVAIL – Marquette Catholic needed three games to defeat visiting Valmeyer in a nonconference match, 15-25, 25-20 and 27-25.
Alyssa Herzing supplied 14 assists and four aces to lead the Explorers. Katie Gierer had nine digs, while Anna Daugherty provided six kills. Taylor Rook, Brittany Pace and Andria Pace all had four blocks.
The 9-11 Explorers are scheduled to entertain Roxana on Thursday.
EAGLES FALL – Host Waterloo defeated Civic Memorial, 25-8, 25-11, in a Mississippi Valley Conference match.
Julie Bruns had 13 digs to lead the Eagles. Sydney Marshall had seven assists and Saige Gehrs came up with three kills. The Eagles are 4-14 overall and winless in the conference. They entertain Metro East Lutheran on Thursday.
MARQUETTE WINS BIG – Matt Buchheit scored four goals in powering the Explorers past Roxana, 12-0, in a nonconference match Tuesday. Marquette tallied eight goals in the first half and never looked back in improving to 8-8-1.
Jon Stewart, Jacob Fischer, Zach Wienman and Nate Siener all scored twice for Marquette. Adam Hammond provided five assists in the lopsided victory. Siener chipped in with three assists. Goalie Brandon Sanfilippo made three saves in recording the shutout.
The Explorers are slated to play host to East Alton-Wood River at 4:30 today for Marquette's Senior Night.
ALTON PREVAILS ON SENIOR NIGHT — The Alton Redbirds welcomed Belleville West to Gordon Moore Park on Tuesday and raced to a 5-1 Senior Night win.
AHS owned a 3-0 lead at the break on the way to the victory. Eric Ferenbach and Brad Leonard posted two goals apiece, while Carl Stradal logged the other score. Drew Hays dished out two assists, while Stradal and Micah Wrigley both had one assist.
The victory elevated the Birds to 9-4-3 overall and 2-3 in the Southwestern Conference.
They return to action at 6:45 p.m. Thursday at Columbia.
CM BOWS IN MVC – Triad ran roughshod over the Eagles, 9-0 in a Mississippi Valley Conference match at Troy Tuesday.
The Eagles, now 2-16 overall and 0-9 in the MVC, play host to Mascoutah on Thursday in another conference contest.
The Knights are 8-5-3 and 4-2. Waterloo, at 7-1, is the league leader.
BIRDS LOG SHUTOUT – Alton blanked Granite City, 9-0 in a Southwestern Conference match to run its record to 15-8. The Redbirds welcome Belleville West on Wednesday and Roxana on Thursday.
AHS will be playing this weekend in the conference tournament at Belleville West. Play starts Friday and concludes Saturday.
Janelle Wilson, Shannon Willis, Abby Fischer, Mary McDaniel, Addie Schenk and Sydnee Maberry won singles bouts. The doubles teams of Wilson/Willis, Fischer/McDaniel and Katie Cronin/Schenk won in doubles matches.
MARQUETTE SQUEAKS PAST TRIAD — The Marquette Catholic Explorers played host to Triad on Tuesday and escaped with a 5-4 triumph.
The win improved the Explorers to 10-5 overall on the season.
Wins in singles came from: Elena Gable, Adri Ventigmilia, Claire Snider and Abby Simonds. Snider and Simonds teamed up to be garner the lone win in doubles for Marquette.
The Explorers entertain Belleville East at 4 p.m. today at Lewis and Clark Community College.
EXPLORERS WIN QUAD – Marquette logged a score of 187 to finish fourth in a quadrangular at the Cloverleaf Course.
Roxana (193), Civic Memorial (195) and Jersey (222) rounded out the competition.
Andrea Mellentin (41) of the Shells was the medalist. Carlee Cronin (42) led the Explorers. Hayley Boker (47), Madi Connors (49) and Lauren Walsh (49) complemented Cronin’s effort.
Lisa Logterman (47) paced CM and Hannah Taylor (46) was best for Jersey.
The Explorers, Shells and Eagles are back in action today in the Class A Marquette Regional at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course.
