ROXANA SLIPS PAST BUNKER HILL — The Roxana Shells rebounded from a Monday loss to down Bunker Hill 37-29 on Thursday.
The win raised the Shells back to .500 on the season at 3-3.
Maddy Sheraka paced Roxana with 14 points, while Hannah Rexford chipped in with 10 points. Erica Sheets scored five points and yanked down 10 rebounds in the win, too.
The Shells now dip into South Central Conference play at 6 p.m. Monday at home against Staunton.
ALTON LOSES TO EAST SIDE — The Alton Redbirds couldn't quite get over the hump against visiting East St. Louis on Thursday, losing 61-54.
The loss dropped Alton to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in the Southwestern Conference. East Side improved to 2-2 and 1-0 with the victory.
"We got behind early, and could not make enough runs to recover,” AHS head coach Bob Rickman said. “We would get close and then would let them make a run to extend their lead back."
LaJarvia Brown poured in 28 points for the Birds in the win, while Cheriena Mitchell added 11 points. The Flyers were paced by BreLaNair Cox with 11 points and Dasha Thomas and Rockelle Stanley with 10 points apiece.
Next for Alton is a home match with O'Fallon at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
"Right now, we are not the team I want us to be, and that will change, we have people that can and will step up," Rickman said.
ALTON DROPS FIRST GAME OF SEASON — The Alton Redbirds suffered their first loss of the season Thursday at East Alton Ice Arena.
It came in a 6-4 setback against defending Class 2A South Division champion Triad. Alton is now 6-1, while the Knights are 5-1.
The Redbirds outshot Triad 39-16, but couldn't figure out Triad goalie Nathan Funk, who had 35 saves.
Alex Rubin scored a pair of goals to lead AHS, while Scotty Waldrup and Jake Bohn each had a goal and an assist and Jake Cunningham and Brendan Lowe had assists in the loss.
Next up for Alton is a 7:15 p.m. showdown Tuesday at EIA against Belleville, before a 7:15 p.m. Thursday battle with Edwardsville.
ALTON POUNDS EAST ST. LOUIS — The Alton Redbirds had little issue on the road Thursday at East St. Louis.
The Birds opened the Southwestern Conference in style, soaring past the Flyers 62-4. Alton is now 3-0 on the young season.
ALTON TOPS BELLEVILLE EAST — The Alton Redbirds handled their business Thursday, rolling past Belleville East at Bowl Haven Lanes in Alton.
The Redbirds collected 3,143 pins, while the Lancers could only gather 2,846. The win improves Alton to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the Southwestern Conference.
Matt Fritz paced the Birds with a 724 series. Other AHS bowlers to compete were: Justin Amistadi (660), Mat Gorman (622), Lucas Pejakovich (595) and Jacob Donahue (542). Fritz had the best individual game with a 257.
The win over East came on the heels of a Wednesday triumph over Taylorville. Alton had 3,013 pins to Taylorville's 2,920 at Bowl Haven.
Pejakovich led the Redbirds with a 663 series in the win. He also produced the best game with a 248.
REDBIRDS ROLL BY LANCERS — The Alton Redbirds got by the Belleville East Lancers on Thursday at Bowl Haven in Southwestern Conference action.
Alton accumulated 2,867 pins in the win, while East only had 2,602. The victory improved AHS to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the SWC.
Eryka Graham paved the way for victory with a 624 series. Other leading Redbirds were: Allison Steines (607) and Amanda Menke (582). Graham had the best game with a 253.
Alton also bested Taylorville on Wednesday. AHS had 2,548 pins while Taylorville had 2,214 pins.
Graham led with a 618 series and a high-game of 223.
