EXPLORERS KICK HAWKS – Lauren Fischer was at her best in goal Tuesday for the Marquette Catholic High girls’ soccer team.
She made 11 saves as the Explorers shut out host Waterloo Gibault, 3-0. The Explorers, with their eyes on a deep run in Class 1A postseason competition, improved to 10-4-2.
Adriana Schindler, Amanda Murray and Elissa Senno scored the Marquette goals, all in the second half. The Explorers are scheduled to welcome Metro East Lutheran on Thursday.
REDBIRDS TIE KNIGHTS – Alton and visiting Breese Mater Dei battled to a scoreless tie in nonconference action at Moore Park.
The 4-8-1 Redbirds, who hadn’t played a match in 11 days, are idle until Tuesday, May 5, when they resume Southwestern Conference competition at Edwardsville. Alton is scheduled to entertain Granite City on May 7.
EAGLES, INDIANS TIE – Civic Memorial and host Mascoutah fought to a 0-0 stalemate in Mississippi Valley Conference play.
The 8-6-1 Eagles return to Valley play Tuesday at Highland. The Indians are 5-9-1.
TIGERS WALLOP REDBIRDS – Edwardsville started quickly and rolled by the visiting Redbirds, 14-0, in Southwestern Conference action.
The Tigers improved to 13-3 overall and 8-0 in the SWC. The Redbirds sank to 11-8 and 3-5. Alton will play in its own invitational Saturday. The Redbirds meet Granite City at 10 a.m. and then either Jersey or Winchester West Central at 11:30.
SHELLS TOP PIASA BIRDS – Hannah Rexford picked up the win as Roxana defeated Southwestern, 4-1, in a South Central Conference game.
The Shells improved to 9-14 overall and 2-4 in the league. The Piasa Birds dropped to 6-10 and 2-3.
Lindsey Scroggins went 2-for-3 and drove in a run for the winners. Elizabeth Rexford was 2-for-2 and knocked in a run. Abbey Palen contributed two hits and an RBI.
Roxana is slated to play Wednesday at Red Bud and Thursday at Metro East Lutheran. Southwestern is scheduled to welcome East Alton-Wood River on Wednesday.
OILERS FALL TO BULLDOGS – Highland put its offense in high gear as the Bulldogs defeated EA-WR, 14-1, in a five-inning nonconference game.
The Oilers, who had only two hits, fell to 9-16.
The Bulldogs scored four times in the first inning to build a comfortable lead and struck for six runs in the fourth to turn it into a lopsided affair. Highland had 13 hits.
EA-WR pitcher Victoria Beachum, who left Monday's game with Marquette after being hit by a pitch, is listed as day-to-day. Beachum went to the hospital Monday after being plunked on the elbow, but X-rays came back negative, it is just a bruise and the SIUE-bound hurler should return to the lineup soon.
REDBIRDS BLANK WARRIORS – The host Redbirds swept by Granite City, 9-0, in SWC action and gave head coach Jesse Macias his 150th career win.
Alton won the six singles bouts and the three doubles matches. Carl Stradal, Kain Henson, Drew Hays, Alex Piazza, Walker Moan and Silas Chapman logged singles wins. Henson will attend SIUE to play hockey next season. The AHS doubles teams of Jeff Durr and Chapman, Julius Reche and Adam Kane, plus Quinn Whitten and Ethan Foley, also snared wins.
The Birds, who improved to 4-9 overall and 2-2 in the SWC, will compete this weekend at the 32-team Pitchford Invitational in Chicagoland. First-round competition begins Friday.
