REDBIRDS BEAT PANTHERS — Brittany Roady had everything going her way Tuesday in O’Fallon.
The Alton High junior right-hander throttled the Panthers on two hits as the Redbirds, posted a 2-0 Southwestern Conference victory. Roady struck out four and walked two. The Redbirds improved to 7-7 overall and lifted their record to 2-4 in the SWC. O’Fallon dropped to 5-12 and 2-4.
Roady got all the offense support she needed in the third inning. Miranda Hudson’s two-out triple drove home Tomi Dublo, who had singled. Hudson went 2-for-4 in the game.
The Redbirds added another run in the seventh. Teammate Sydney Hartman, who also was 2-for-3, singled in the inning. Shannon Jackson bunted her to second base and then Katelyn Presley singled Hartman home.
Alton is scheduled to play four road games in four days. The Redbirds go to Cahokia on Wednesday, Granite City on Friday, Civic Memorial on Friday and Southwestern on Saturday.
SCHORMAN TOSSES NO-HITTER – Marquette Catholic freshman Meghan Schorman put on a dazzling pitching performance against Bunker Hill.
She spun a no-hitter and struck out 17 as the Explorers defeated the Minutemaids, 4-0, in Prairie State Conference competition.
Schorman walked two in a 106-pitch outing.
The Explorers, improving to 12-4, secured their fifth consecutive win. They made the most of eight hits and used Megan Wittich’s three-run home run in the third to build a four-run lead.
Leadoff hitter Tess Eberlin went 2-for-4 to stoke the attack. The Explorers are slated to play host to Hillsboro on Wednesday.
OILERS BEAT EAGLES – Tori Beachum led the way as EA-WR bested CM, 6-2, in a nonconference game at the Bethalto Sports Complex Tuesday.
The senior left-hander struck out 10 and backed her cause with three hits. She also drove in two runs. Kaleigh Young and Morgan Moxey blasted home runs for the winners. Haley Shewmake and Emme Flanigan contributed RBIs for the Oilers, now 7-14.
Kelsey Deaton and Katelyn Turbyfill batted in runs for the 6-8 Eagles. Ryan Allison was the losing pitcher.
SHELLS SUFFER DEFEAT — Visiting Highland rolled to a 15-2 victory over Roxana in a nonconference game. The 6-11 Shells are slated to play host to Staunton on Wednesday.
EXPLORERS DOWN NORMAL — Host Marquette amassed an early lead and defeated Normal Community High, 3-1, at Moore Park.
Freshman Amanda Murray scored twice in the first half for the Explorers, now 8-2-2. They led 3-0 at one point. Normal Community slipped to 7-3-1.
Marquette is competing this week in the Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin Tournament. The three-day event starts Thursday.
EAGLES WALLOP KNIGHTS — CM exploded for a six-run first inning to pound Metro East Lutheran, 10-1, in a nonconference game at Edwardsville.
Jack Walker logged the win as the Eagles improved to 8-12. They erupted for 14 hits. Both Tyler Andrus and Devin Daniels doubled and tripled and knocked in three runs to pace them. Corey Price, Caleb Buhs and Lukas Jones all had two hits.
MARKS SHINES IN LOSS – Blake Marks of EA-WR went 4-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, but the Oilers lost at Staunton, 4-3.
Sam Alexander’s RBI single in the seventh provided the Bulldogs with the winning run.
Marks clouted a two-run homer in the fifth, yet it wasn’t enough as the Oilers sank to 4-18. The Bulldogs improved to 5-8.
