REDBIRDS PREVAIL — The Alton Redbirds improved to 23-3-1 after defeating visiting Riverview Gardens, 25-5, and 25-18 Tuesday. The Redbirds are one win away from matching the school record for victories. The 2008 team went 24-9. Alton has had a volleyball program since 1976.
Savannah Fisher contributed 10 service points, including eight aces, in the Birds’ latest win. Jada Green and Megan Paulda both had five kills. Green also supplied 13 points, with six aces. Kailin Haug had seven points.
EXPLORERS BOW — Mount Olive won two of three games to shade Marquette Catholic in Prairie State Conference competition.
The 8-10 Explorers won the first game, 25-13, but the Wildcats bounced back to win 25-19 and 25-21.
Andria Pace led Marquette in the loss with nine kills and five aces. Alyssa Herzing dished out 18 assists, while Kalie Buecker had 10 digs and Taylor Rook and Brittany Pace each logged two blocks to lead the Explorers statistically.
EAGLES FALL TO JERSEY — The visiting Eagles topped the Panthers 25-21 in the first game, but Jersey responded with wins of 25-16 and 25-18 to secure the Mississippi Valley Conference victory.
Saige Gehrs strung together 12 kills and a block to pace the Eagles. Kennedy Carnes contributed eight kills and 13 service points, six of them aces. Alaina Trosley had 17 digs and Julie Bruns pitched in 15 more digs.
REDBIRDS ARE THIRD IN SWC – Alton shot a 348 score to take third in the boys' league tournament at the Stonewolf Course in Fairview Heights.
Edwardsville carded a 320 score for its fourth consecutive conference championship. O’Fallon finished a distant second with a 335 total. Belleville East (350), Collinsville (354), Belleville West (355) and Granite City (363) rounded out the team scores.
Justin Hemmings of Edwardsville shot a 72 for medalist honors.
EXPLORERS WIN BIG – Marquette scooted past visiting Greenville, 7-2 in a nonconference match as the Explorers improved to 9-2.
Shelby Jones, Laura Moore, Elena Gable, Claire Snider and Abbi Simonds all were singles winners for the Explorers. The Moore-Gable and Snider-Simmonds doubles teams also won.
Marquette is scheduled to play Wednesday at Belleville West.
EAGLES FALL – Highland defeated CM, 4-0 in a MVC match at the Bethalto Sports Complex. The Eagles, who honored former coach Don Woelfel before the match, fell to 2-13.
Woelfel started the program at CM in 1977 and retired in 2012 after coaching the Eagles for 36 years. He compiled a 314-313-42 record, including five Valley titles.
